U Kon Echelon Biking Club held two events over the past two weekends.

Although many of our riders were busy with other things, we had small groups come out for each weekend of racing.

Tour de Haines Junction May 14th:

Due to snow, rain and blustery conditions, a decision was made to make this a one day stage race. The 20 km time trial was in the morning, and in the afternoon the one-way hill climb road race from Bear Creek Lodge towards the direction of Beaver Creek took place.

The fastest time for the males was posted by Ben Lambert at 34.40 and the fastest for the females was Ema Archbold with a time of 38.40.

In the afternoon race, only four racers did the hill climb. Coming in first for the males was Alex Lebarge with a time of 38.07, just a second short of Ema Archbold’s time of 38.06. Johna Irving-Staley participated in this one and posted a time of 46.5 and Trena Irving did a time of 51.05.

For the May 21st and May 22nd Tour de Skagway, conditions were sunny but extremely windy both days. The overall winner in U15 boys was Alex Lebarge with an overall time of two hours, 38 minutes and 42 seconds. Alex ripped it up on the Hill Climb Time trial with a time of 27.21, almost five minutes faster than the next nearest time. He took his same strategy of ‘attacking’ the hill on the final lap of the road race, coming in with a time of 1:36:42, the fastest road race time overall. In second and third place very close behind was Ema Archbold with a time of one hour, 37 minutes, and 48 seconds and Mack Jenner with a time of 1:37:49. Steve Biss came in at one hour and 42 minutes and Trena Irving finished with a time of 1:50:30.

The road race was done at a 48 km distance, due to the very intense headwind that prevented the riders from catching any break on the way out, but a tail wind on the way back.

Next up for our club is the Canada Games Road trials being held by Cycling Association of Yukon on June 10th, 11th and 12th. U Kon Echelon will also be putting on some weekly time trials, criteriums, and cross-country mountain bike races in June and July, so stay tuned.

On June 18, the Southern Lakes Yukon Granfondo will take place, so also mark your calendars for that event.
