Iain Breckenridge is an inspirational leader just like William Wallace.

He has galvanised his side through an incredibly difficult season, never letting the results affect the enjoyment of playing.

This commitment to the cause was shown in the semifinal as his troops fought against the odds. Remarkably, they first held off the Pepsi onslaught, before becoming more dominant towards the end of the game.

Pepsi’s golden boot winner Justin Carre was unable to break down the Air North defence, with Juergen Korn policing the back line well. Ciaran Connolly used every last piece of energy that he possessed to protect his goal.

When Breckenridge was adjudged to be fouled in the area, a penalty was awarded. Breckenridge dusted himself off and with Kahunas the size of a watermelon stroked the ball into the back of the net.

The drama didn’t end there. With the clock on life support, Pepsi’s Stephen McGovern tied the score which led to the game being decided on penalty kicks.

Air North’s players held their nerve, as they converted both their spot kicks for a Cinderella win that shows form counts for nothing in the playoffs.

Yukon Brewing pull off
massive shock

The lowest ranked team in the playoffs, Yukon Brewing, took down league winners Yukoninfo.com in a classic playoff game 5-4 to secure their place in the finals.

Yukoninfo.com built up a lead through two goals from Keith Maguire, but were pegged back in quick time, before Info scored again through Matthias Hartmann, only for Brewing to equalize again.

The game was then back and forth with Yukon Brewing sensing an upset, as the six players of Yukoninfo.com starting to tire.

Yukon Brewing scored again in a sweeping move covering the length of the field.

Craig Caldwell swept in a goal they richly deserved, and had the chance to round off the victory when they were awarded a penalty, but Jan Aalt van den Hoorn pulled off a magnificent save, before Hartmann scored again for Yukoninfo.com.

The whole Yukon Brewing team were heroic, never taking a backward step and when skipper Marcelo Gortari scored his second goal of the game, Yukon Brewing finally broke the will of Yukoninfo.com.

Shawn Fearon and Kruno Kunovic were excellent throughout and both scored in the match.

It was a game that shows that if you have belief in yourself and your teammates anything is possile.

This result, coupled with the earlier one, was the first time in the history of the over 35’s that the bottom two teams in the league will contest the final, which will be at 11:00 a.m. at the Canada Games Centre.
