Over-35 Men’s Soccer: Epic Maratos performance wins the day

George Maratos, the Air North Rangers goalkeeper, was like his Greek forebearers of old.

George Maratos, the Air North Rangers goalkeeper, was like his Greek forebearers of old. His performance was worth a place in one of Homer’s tales as a rival of Odyssus, as he overcame personal hardships and accomplished heroic deeds, all to achieve his place in eternity, leading his team to victory over Yukoninfo.com and another season double for captain Iain Breckenridge.

Breckenridge’s uncanny ability to win trophies has been unparalleled in Whitehorse Rapids Over-35’s history as he has won glory in three of his four years as captain.

As you would expect from two very good sides, it was going to take something special for one team to raise the coveted trophy. Justin Carre and Matthias Hartmann were on target for Yukoninfo.com, with the excellent River Walton popping up with two goals for Air North, but the real story was the battle of the two keepers as both Maratos and Stu Knaack were on top form. Maratos saved a number of attempts that mere mortals would have let in, but the power of his Olympian gods flowed through him.

The game finished tied and it came down to penalties. Maratos saved from Carre and Hartman, as Knack saved from Obrien, but Craig Caldwell and Franklin Fru held their nerve and slotted home for an Air North victory.

At the end of season awards, Mark Chandler and Iain Breckenridge won the MVP award, Alejandro Pulido won the Best Keeper trophy, Andy Todd won the Spirit award while Jesse Walchuk was voted the Underrated Player of the Year.

Soccer takes a break for a week before the Whitehorse Co-ed invitational tournament rounds out a very successful and enjoyable season.
