Four-time race champion Lance Mackey has added his name to the 2015 Yukon Quest roster.

The 44-year-old Alaskan musher announced his decision to return to the international sled dog race on social media yesterday.

“Officially entered in the Yukon Quest today. Looking forward to being on the trail with the best mushers in the world,” reads a statement on Mackey’s Twitter account.

Multiple news reports out of Alaska indicate Mackey will replace kennel partner Jimmy Lebling on the 1,600-kilometre escapade.

Mackey has previously won the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Quests and is also a four-time winner of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Other past Yukon Quest winners registered for the current race include Allen Moore (2013, 2014), Hugh Neff (2012) and Jeff King (1989) – also a four-time Iditarod champ.

Twenty-eight mushers have registered for the 2015, a year after just 18 mushers hit the start line – a record low. This year’s race purse is $121,055 US, split amongst the top 15 mushers.

The 2015 race will begin Feb. 7 in Whitehorse.
