The Guns N’ Hoses charity hockey game for Special Olympics was a big success.

The game faced off at Takhini Arena Saturday afternoon.

It featured the Yukon RCMP “M” division against the Whitehorse Fire Department (WFD).

Last year’s game was a close one, as it went to a shootout won by the fire department.

This year’s game came down to the wire as well.

The RCMP came back from being down 5-3, as RCMP MVP Josh Savill tied the game up at 5-5 with 2:57 left.

However, fire department MVP Coty Fraser scored the winning goal with 1:05 left to ice the victory for the fire department.

Fraser said it was “a great game. It’s really fun playing these guys and it’s for a great cause. We all have fun.”

Fraser said it means “everything” to play in the Guns N’ Hoses game.

“That’s what it’s about. It’s less about the hockey, even though there is a bit of a rivalry, it’s more for the cause.”

Fraser said it’s a very low level grudge match.

“We all get along at work and off work.”

Of the tight ending, Fraser said, “I thought it was going to go to a shootout again.”

He attributed his winning goal to being in the “right place at the right time.”

Fraser’s teammate, Wyatt Gale, netted two goals for the WFD, including a spectacular solo effort on the fifth goal.

“It was a lot of fun. It was a good cause and nice to see everyone come out and watch it.”

Gale said it was “special” to play in the game.

“Especially giving back to the community. All the money and proceeds are going to people in need, so it’s good for everyone.”

Regarding the tight game at the end, Gale said, “It was a bit nip and tuck. I think the boys just stepped up there and everyone wanted to win.”

Gale said a shootout was in the back of his mind but he definitely wanted to win out on the ice.”

Savill, who also scored the fourth RCMP goal, said it was a good game.

“It’s all about the Special Olympics and the fundraising. Good luck to those athletes down in Calgary when they go down to participate.”

When asked what it means to play in this game, Savill replied, “It’s great. It’s fun. It’s nice to see everybody come out and enjoy the experience. I think the kids get the most out of it.

“Those fire-fighters, they’re tough. They put a good team together again this year and well, there’s always next year.”

Savill said he was excepting it to come down to the wire.

“Both teams fought hard and it’s a nail-biter when this game goes on.”

“Savill added, “I appreciate everyone coming out and enjoying the time out here today.”

Besides Gales two goals and Fraser’s winner, the fire department got goals from Barry Bilsner (who scored on a penalty shot. There were no power plays, only numerous penalty shots.), Jack Blisner and Ryan Miller.

Fraser also tallied two assists for the fire crew.

Mark Flanagan, Kirk Gale and Philip Isabelle added singles to Savill’s brace for the RCMP.

Isabelle also notched three assists for the RCMP crew.

Before the game, Roxx Hunter performed the national anthem on his electric guitar.

The Team Yukon flag bearer for the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary, Brandle Bruneau, dropped the puck for the ceremonial face-off.

The Yukon Special Olympics team came on the ice during the first intermission. Mike Sumner also presented his figure skating routine during the break.

The second intermission featured a puck toss, with people tossing pucks on the ice to win prizes.

The amount raised for Special Olympics Yukon is still to be determined.
