Five Special Olympics athletes will represent the territory in Newfoundland and Labrador this winter.

Five athletes were chosen as Team Yukon 2016 for the upcoming Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, set for Feb. 29 to March 5, 2016.

The announcement was made Dec. 21 at Sport Yukon headquarters.

On the team are figure skaters Mike Sumner and Tijana McCarthy, alongside head coach Michelle Semaschuk.

Also cracking the roster are cross-country skiers Owen Munroe, Darby McIntyre and Ernest Chua, with coaches Helen Slama and Jerome McIntyre.

Chef de mission is Brettanie Deal-Porter.

The team qualified by competing at the 2015 Special Olympics BC Winter Games held this past winter in Kamloops.

“I am so pleased with the hard work and dedication of each athlete,” said Special Olympics Yukon executive director Serge Michaud in an email to the Star.

“It’s not easy balancing work and school schedules around many hours of training and preparation. However, our athletes and their family supports are fully committed.”
