Battling all the conditions the Kluane Range could throw at him, David Jackson continued to knock time off his previous best races.

The 20-year-old cruised to three stage victories in the Tour de Haines Junction last weekend.

Jackson broke his previous time trial personal best by several minutes, said coach and event organizer Trena Irving.

“He was very, very happy,” she said.

The weather for Saturday’s time trial and hill climb was less than ideal and riders finished “soaking wet.”

However, for the road race on Sunday, the weather broke and riders were at times treated to blue skies.

The U Kon Echelon club is seeing a growth in youth participants this year and the U15 girls division is seeing fierce competition for the top spot.

Newcomer Veronica Porter claimed the overall title by 29 seconds over second-place’s Mollie Fraser. Ava Irving-Staley rounded out the category in third.

Meanwhile, in the U15 boys division, Oscar Setterington laid down a decisive performance, claiming the general classification win by about 30 minutes.

Irving described his rides over the weekend as “fast and furious.”

The general classification is decided by combing times from all three events.

With 17 participants and more than 1/2 youth, Irving said “We (had) more kids than ever this weekend.”

With the smooth pavement and low traffic, they were also able to practise racing skills like pacelines, where cyclists ride in a single file and share the workload of travelling into the wind.

Between races, youth were enjoying ice cream as prizes at the Frosty Freeze.

The next stage race will be this weekend in Alaska for the Tour de Skagway, which will feature a hill climb, time trial and road race.
