The first Yukon boxer to represent the Yukon at a Gold Gloves event earned a silver medal in Calgary last weekend.

Roan Evans-Ehricht, 18, dropped his only bout to 22-year-old Petru Bolun from Goldenstars Boxing in Calgary. The loss saw the Whitehorse boxer’s record fall to 7-2.

While Bolun entered competition six pounds overweight in the light heavyweight category (capped at 178 pounds), Evans-Ehricht and coach Jess Staffen chose to take the bout regardless.

“I thought Roan came out strong and demanded respect right away,” Staffen said. “Talking to the officials after, everyone agreed that he won the first round.”

After that, however, Evans-Ehricht’s pace slowed slightly.

“His cardio started to affect him,” Staffen noted. “This was his first time fighting three three-minute rounds. At the lower-experience levels, he’d be fighting three two-minute rounds.”

The taller, heavier Bolun out-punched Evans-Ehricht to take the final two rounds.

The bout took place at the Grizzly Cage boxing club on March 21.

Bolun had reportedly won his last 10 bouts by technical knockout.

“There was no other competitors in the weight class,” Staffen noted. “We could have had Roan fight at a junior level, but we really wanted to open him up and have him fight at the Gold Gloves level.

“There was two other guys he could have fought at the junior level, but he could have easily beaten both of them. We wanted a challenge for him.”

Gold Gloves is typically meant for boxers with more than 10 bouts, but Evans-Ehricht has chosen to fast-track his career.

“Roan performed amazingly well and we’re all really proud of him,” said Staffen.

Previously this season, Evans-Ehricht earned gold at a Silver Gloves event in Edmonton, as well as gold at a Bronze Gloves meet in Whitecourt, Alta., where he was also named top boxer for the second straight year.

Congrats to Roan for his great effort and silver medal at the Gold Gloves in Calgary!!! Would like to make a correction though, that he is not the first Yukon boxer to attend a Gold Gloves. Years ago, Yukon boxers attended Golden Gloves in British Columbia winning at least one gold medal.
