Courtland (Ross) Fooks

January 23rd, 1945 – November 1st, 2023

Ross was born to Robert & Sheila in Edinburgh Scotland.

His early youth was spent in Dartmouth Nova Scotia and Southern Alberta.

He apprenticed as a heavy-duty mechanic in Fort McMurray through the early 60s.

In what started as, “a little road trip, just to see the country”, in his 1950 International, Ross made his way to the Yukon from Beaverlodge Alberta in 1965.

(That we know of, in the Yukon): he worked for Russell Transport, Ed Chambers, Art Smith, Dennis Klein, Caron Diamond Drilling, Arctic Diamond Drilling, 918 Construction, Arctic Gold & Silver Mines, Miller Creek Placer, Cassiar Asbestos / United Keno Hill, General Enterprises, Yukon Alaska Transport, Lomak, Ibex Contracting, Kluane Drilling / H. Coyne & Sons, as well as running his own 'Ross Fooks Transport' trucking & specialty hauling.

More recently, many of us got to know him in his time at Air North, where he lived on the property and looked after the ground-support equipment and building maintenance.

Although his true passion was truck driving, he was a meticulous mechanic and perhaps an outlier-genius when it came to electrical problems. You really couldn't much interest Ross in a "job". It was a mission, that he was really up for.

He was the one of the Yukon's proverbial "Colourful 5%" for certain! They 'broke the mold' when they made Ross...

Ross passed away at Whistle Bend Place. A couple of his friends and the very caring staff of House 7 were with him.

He is survived by his older sister, Patricia Murrans (John) who lives in Halifax, and his nephews, Gregory & Derek.

The best of Ross’s extensive book collection has been donated to Whistle Bend Place and a library created in his name for future residents to enjoy.

Per his wishes, we are looking forward to a celebration of his life, February 24th, beginning 6PM at the Casa Loma Motel.

A slide show of Ross’s life & times will be enjoyed by all at the celebration. If you have photos of Ross, or other contributions to his memory that you wish to share, please call or text Kyle Cameron at (867) 334-3365.
