Saturday’s ferocious winds caused some 20 power outages, mostly in the area of Wolf Creek, Pineridge and Mount Sima, says the spokeswoman for ATCO Electric Yukon.

Stephanie Cunha said early this afternoon the first call came in at 10 a.m. The last outage was restored shortly after 9 p.m.

Some 30 residents of Wolf Creek were without power for almost three hours beginning at around 12:45 p.m. because a tree blown down by the wind didn’t just fall on the line, but broke through it, Cunha said.

“The outage at Wolf Creek was one of about 20 different trouble calls we received Saturday as a result of that windstorm,” said Cunha. “We had eight guys responding to power outages and trouble calls.”

She said most of the outages were isolated and involved one or two customers.

All of the outages were related to the windstorm, and power was restored in most cases within two hours, she said.

Meteorologist Doug Lundquist of Environment Canada said this morning gusts early Saturday at the Whitehorse airport were measured at speeds up 59 kilometres per hour. It’s not unusual, however, to have stronger winds in different areas of the city, he said.
