Two days after he escaped custody and ran away through the front doors of the Whitehorse courthouse, the RCMP are still looking for Richard Linklater.

The 33-year-old First Nations man had been arrested and was in the custody of an RCMP member during a show-cause hearing on Saturday at around 10:45 a.m.

Linklater, who escaped barefoot, was last seen wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants.

He escaped through the front doors of the courthouse and onto Second Avenue.

He is five feet, nine inches tall.

He appeared in court on robbery charges and for allegedly failing to comply with a probation order.

“Linklater has had frequent contact with the police and court system. The majority of these have been for property crimes,” Whitehorse RCMP spokesperson Julia Fox told the Star in an email today.

Police are asking the public not to approach Linklater if seen, but to call 911.

“There is always an increased element of risk involved with an escaped individual,” Fox said.

The exact details of how Linklater managed to escape custody are still unclear.

“Mr. Linklater was seated with his lawyer in Courtroom 5, and being addressed by the justice of the peace when he fled on foot,” said Fox.

Following his escape, Whitehorse RCMP originally deployed duty and plainclothes members along with Police Dog Services to conduct a ground search.

“Multiple units within the Whitehorse RCMP detachment, as well RCMP members and employees territory-wide, continue to make efforts to locate Mr. Linklater,” said Fox.

The police are urging Linklater to turn himself in.

“We also encourage anyone who knows of Mr. Linklater’s whereabouts to let us know so that he can be returned to custody safely,” the RCMP said.

A review of the incident is underway.

“The RCMP has immediately undertaken a review of the circumstances and prisoner security on weekends in order to identify how the escape occurred, how incidents of this sort can be prevented in the future,” Fox said.

Anybody with information is asked to contact the police at 667-5555.

So he just ran away. Good job officers, that should never happen. Everyday something different in this dirty little town.

They will find him hiding out in someones house and as usual the people who are hiding him will not get charged and they know it .

June - indeed. If he keeps away from Subway and Starbucks as well as Hortons, then he'll remain a free man for eternity. (Perhaps Whitehorse's finest could take a look in the shoe department of the big box stores here - might give them a lead ).

Perhaps our master of the handcuffs, Ryan Leef could demonstrate how to control an arrested person

Last time i made comments about the effectiveness, response time etc of the local M Division, the Star prudently edited it all out.
As regards Mr. Linklater, as long as he stays away from Tim Hortons' he should remain free.
