Municipal voting is already underway

At least a few of the more than 18,675 voters on the city’s list of electors will not be able to vote in the Oct. 15 municipal election.

At least a few of the more than 18,675 voters on the city’s list of electors will not be able to vote in the Oct. 15 municipal election.

Returning officer Norma Felker confirmed today an increase of nearly 7,000 people on the revised list of electors for the city over the 2012 list of 11,831 people,

She noted in an interview this morning some of those on the list are living outside city limits.

As she explained, the situation comes from an agreement the city has with Elections Canada to share information with Elections Canada looking at the greater Whitehorse area, including streets like Gentian Lane just outside city limits, rather than looking at the municipal boundary.

While the city is not able to take those names off the list, Felker said those residents will not be eligible to vote in the municipal election and their names will be highlighted for elections officials.

To cast a ballot in the Whitehorse municipal election, voters must have lived in the city for one year, be a Canadian citizen and be at least 18 years old.

Felker pointed out the Elections Canada information looking outside of city limits does not account for the large increase to the voters list; in fact it probably doesn’t even account for 500 names on the list.

Rather, she explained, it is more likely a reflection of changes in the city since 2009, when the city last conducted an enumeration.

An update was done in 2012 for voters who updated their information with the city.

Most voters will likely wait until Oct. 15 to cast their ballot.

However, some are already taking advantage of the special ballot available at city hall during regular business hours, with a total of 130 getting their vote in so far with still a week to go with that option.

Felker said the city saw a total of 293 special ballots cast in 2012.

Tomorrow will mark the city’s advance poll.

Voters who may not be able to make it to a polling station on Oct. 15 will be able to cast their ballot from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at city hall on Second Avenue.

In 2012, a total of 399 voters visited the advance poll, with the 2009 advance poll seeing 214 voters come up.

“It’s typically very busy,” Felker said, adding though it’s impossible to predict how many will cast their ballots a week ahead of time.

For those opting to wait until election day, polls will be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, Vanier Catholic Secondary School, École Émilie-Tremblay School, the church hall at the corner of Wann Road and Boxwood Street in Porter Creek, the Yukon Transportation Museum, the Canada Games Centre and Yukon College.

Additional polls with limited hours will also be set up at the Yukon Government Main Administration Building from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., city hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Whitehorse General Hospital from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Kwanlin Dün Potlatch House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Macaulay Lodge from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Copper Ridge Place from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This will mark the first election in the city that voters will not be required to go to a certain polling location based on their address, but rather visit whatever poll they choose, with the city making use of an electronic system.

A mobile poll that will come to a voter’s home can also be booked in advance for voters who are unable to get to a poll.

Voters are reminded to bring identification showing their street address.

Alternatively, voters who may not have ID will have the option to swear an oath at the poll to vote.

I would like to know (and have been asking since the start of the campaigning) which candidates are in favor of the 8 million unneeded proposed 8 million dollar Soccer stadium. I will not be voting for these candidates and that includes any of the 3 incumbents who we thank for their service.

I bring the following to Mayor position on Oct 8, 2015 at 2:33 pm

Accountability, give staff proper direction and support, make informed decisions based on facts, listen to the residents of the City, work hard to move the City forward in a positive manner and build a relationship with our residents, businesses and other levels of government and bring in line taxes and costs of services.

The new regs really make it easy for everyone to vote.

It's my franchise as a citizen. Good luck to all the new entries except George Arcand and Mandeep and I hope none of the current council get in again. Except Curtis.. he got real lucky with those candidates willing to run for Mayor.
