Legislature to reconvene in four weeks

Territorial politicians

By Christopher Reynolds on March 5, 2015

Territorial politicians will gather once again under the slanted ceiling of the House on April 2 to table the annual budget and begin a nearly two-month bout of legislative back-and-forth on Yukoners’ behalf.

Premier Darrell Pasloski announced this morning the Speaker will reconvene the Yukon Legislative Assembly in exactly four weeks.

“Our government looks forward to a positive and productive spring sitting that will continue the work of this government and all elected members on behalf of all Yukoners,” Pasloski said in a release.

“We will be tabling the 2015/16 budget, along with a number of other legislative proposals which will continue our ongoing work to ensure Yukon is the best place in Canada in which to live, work, play and raise a family,” he said, echoing the de facto Yukon Party motto.

The premier said the April start date was chosen to avoid overlap with the school spring break from March 16 to 27.

NDP Leader Liz Hanson, nearing the end of a weeks-long tour of the communities, said several issues continue to demand attention.

“There’s an undercurrent of real concern about the sagging economy in the Yukon, the uncertainty that’s been created by the Yukon Party because of its really stubborn adherence to its ideology and unwillingness to work with communities — and that includes First Nations governments,” Hanson told the Star today.

“It comes down to a lack of planning and a lack of good government ... and they affect ordinary people in a real way.”

The government release invited the public to attend the opening of the spring sitting at the legislature, 2071 Second Ave. in Whitehorse.

What's helping to wreck the Yukon economy is no leadership by Liberal or NDP, their friends the anti development group, and the noise makers that scare off investment with no understanding of how to promote economic development. When I heard Sandy Silver talking about a social license that just made it clear he is getting bad advice that does not represent the Yukon interest young to old.

Whose destroying the economy NDP/Liberals on Mar 9, 2015 at 8:07 pm

Neither party wants mining, gas development, and make lots of negative noise that scare off investors, they want so many regulations that they will stop development. You have the Department of Economic Development senior staff who don't know how to lead economic development and looks like they support the NDP or liberals.. What do you expect. The NDP and liberals like to criticizes but have no direction on the economy.

NDP and Sandy Silver.
Get some good people to run for your parties and join together if necessary to defeat this government.

Governing in Yukon is so so simple. Accept and spend the transfer payments wisely and get along with First Nation. It's too bad the Yukon Party did not get that. Maybe they will get to spend time together reflecting on their failures while on the golf course.

Next election we need to vote in a couple of Green or Independent MLAs that are not tainted by association with the YP/NDP/Lib old boys and girls clubs waiting to feed from the trough and enrich their friends and hope that they can hold the feet of whoever forms the next government and opposition to the fire.

What will be MORE of a joke is if the people of the Yukon do not vote this crew out in the election. They have had way too long to damage the Yukon & fill their own pockets at everyones' expense.

This government is a joke. Wrecked the economy, damaged relations with FN's, appointed unqualified people into key jobs ( the new chief of staff aka lol Kent campaign manager was appointed to key gov jobs without competition) and we get to watch these guys spend money to try and win next election...what a joke.
