SHOCKED – The man was sentenced last July to a year in jail but was released four months early. The victim's mother only learned about it the day of his release.

‘It was a really nasty shock,’ mom says

The mother of a seven-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted by her father received no notification the man was being released early from jail.

“It was a really nasty shock,” the mother told the Star in an interview.

“I dropped the glass I was holding when they told me.”

A publication ban prohibits disclosing any details that would publicly identify the girl. That includes the man’s and the mother’s names.

The offender was sentenced to a year in jail in July 2015.

The father admitted to sexually assaulting his daughter, who was six years old at the time, more than 10 times.

At a meeting with territorial victim services officials after the man’s release, the mother was told that a miscommunication had led to the absence of timely notification.

Neither the RCMP nor victim services staff were notified ahead of time, she said.

She learned of the man’s release on March 9, the day he left the Whitehorse Correctional Centre (WCC) – and by accident.

She has decided not to tell her daughter.

Now seven, the girl has stopped having nightmares.

“She stopped screaming through the nights,” her mother said.

“It took her a long time to realize that he couldn’t hurt her anymore.”

The parents had shared custody of the girl at the time the assaults took place.

The child would stay with him during the week and visit her mom during the weekends.

From June 2013 to January 2014, the man sexually assaulted his daughter in a basement bedroom.

The girl told a school librarian, who reported it.

At the sentencing hearing in July 2015, Judge Michael Cozens said it was clear the family was in “considerable pain.”

“(The girl) will be dealing with the trauma for the rest of her life,” he said at the time. “But her victimization will not define her.”

The girl is now in a safe place, and has access to weekly counselling.

She doesn’t talk about her father and wants nothing to do with him, her mother told the Star.

“I want a new dad,” her daughter told her.

Despite that lapse, victim services staff did a good job helping her, the mother pointed out.

“(And) the cops were very thorough; they wouldn’t give up,” she said. She was referring to several interviews the police conducted back when the man was denying the accusations.

Asked about the case, a Department of Justice spokesperson told the Star it cannot comment because of privacy considerations.

Sentenced inmates can earn up to 15 days of remission for every month served, the department noted.

In the man’s case, he was released four months early.

The mother said she was told he was a “model inmate.”

“Victim services works closely with WCC and Offender Supervision and Services. Updates are given at Sexual Offender Risk Management Meetings and WCC often contacts Victim Services to gather victim input or to notify victims, of inmates being released or being out of the facility on pass,” department spokesperson Tyler Plaunt told the Star in an email.

“The Director of Victims Services will receive, evaluate or respond to any submission from a victim who considers that the Yukon Victims’ Bill of Rights has not been respected in their case or who has other concerns with the administration of the Yukon Victims of Crime Act.”

Franciswhateveryournameis, your comment didn't make any sense. I will assume by community, you refer to First Nations, which again does not make sense. There are perverts in every community, every race, every background, and the only one to blame is the offender. The "father" created the problem and he alone is to blame!!???

And no one ever looks at their community first. Was what this dad did right? No, it wasn't. But look in the mirror. Stop blaming others for the problems you create. End of story.

Facts on Apr 11, 2016 at 9:15 am

I just want to remind everyone that this is a small place (the Yukon) and before people start spreading names, make DAMN SURE that you have facts before spreading the name of this monster around town. Make sure you know for sure he was arrested, charged and in jail. There are far too many people out there being accused by a disgruntled ex trying to get custody of children and making last efforts and accusing the child's father of doing this (not to mention, then putting their child through awful tests to be proved that they are lying).

I totally agree that this is sick and disgusting, but just reminding people to make sure that they know 100% who did this before they start spreading who it "might" be.

History has shown us that pedophilia is a disease that is next to impossible to cure. What protection does this little girl have now? Other little kids? From this same person? Of course he was a model prisoner. No kids in the jail and he would have been kept from the other inmates for his own protection. Mark my words this will be haunting and tragic for some family in the future.

Please Explain on Apr 10, 2016 at 2:57 pm

I would like one of the people who is down voting the comments expressing revulsion concerning the actions and lack of punishment for this sick, twisted individual to write in and explain themselves please. Are you a family member who is going to stand by this individual no matter what? Are you a long time friend who chooses to stick up for this individual for some incomprehensible reason? Or do you just endorse this individuals acts of messing with his own daughter and the incredibly lenient 'non sentence' for his crime?
Because simply stated, the fact that there are a few people out there who are apparently voting in support of this person is very, very disturbing to say the least.

As usual everyone blames the judges and the justice(?) system. Really, it's the politicians that make up the rules that these people get judged by and guess who keeps electing those politicians? The Harpercites were only tough on crime on paper.

I agree with Mr.M, and I suspect it is the same weirdo disliking all the sane rational comments, maybe the lower than an animal rapist reads the paper. Any person that harms a child does not deserve a second chance. There is no grey area, she will not get a second chance at innocence, a childhood, or to have a bio dad who is not a dirt bag. Everyone knows these people do not change, or see the error in their ways. I say at the very least the we should bring back the scarlet letter, because castration is not politically correct. At least a giant red "P" on his forehead would warn others not to leave him alone with children.

This exemplifies everything that's wrong with the just-us business. Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing the public can do about it.

Sad System on Apr 9, 2016 at 12:13 pm

1 year sentence is not justice. Early release is not justice. Forgetting to inform the mother who has the child is disturbing and again not justice.

Mr. Couzens, as a representative of the Justice system, is there no way you could have provided this guy with a sentence that was more fitting of the crime? The system has failed this young child and we rely on the courts to change that.

Cannot believe that the justice system would give this guy a one year sentence. What a slap in the face for the mother and little girl. I also can't believe that someone would dislike the comments made by nauseating. Nauseating is exactly right in his comments. The justice system and the correctional system needs to change. The government should pull their heads all the way out and give stiffer sentences and DO NOT give a person lesser time for being a model inmate. They are in there for a reason. I hope this girl and her mother can move on and make the best out of a bad situation. Keep strong.

We live in a Sick and Perverse Society. Greater value is placed on Property and Possessions than on Innocence. Had this person (and I use the term loosely) stolen a car, he would have gotten up to 10 years in jail. Rape his own daughter, get one year! This guy needs to be castrated publicly, and that should be the status quo for ALL sexual offenders. Just my personal opinion!

Ban him from Whitehorse and any city where the 7 year old daughter lives. She should never have to set eyes on this horrible monster again. May somebody strike his existence….I don't believe in rehabilitation of pedifiles and incest.

Nauseating: It wouldn't have mattered if he got 10 years - one year for every time he assaulted the little girl, he still would have gotten out early. And the citizens of Canada have been making the same complaints about these people for years and nothing has changed, nor will. There are two things Canada has to do, get rid of the National Parole Board and appoint judges with wisdom.

It's unfortunate that these monsters can't be identified so that 'blanket party justice' can mete out effective punishment when the just-us business fails to do it's job. The victim will never forget the abuse.
In some cultures the relatives of the victim would give the monster a 'blanket party' that included breaking both knees so the monster carries the lesson for the rest of their life.

This is disgusting. A year in jail and only did 6 months? You got to be kidding me. A man that smokes a joint on the street something that helps people n they get 3-25 years in jail for. This man SEXUALLY ASSULTED his 6 year old daughter, violated her in ways she will never forget the rest of her life and u give the man 6 months. Well you should get a pat on the back for your duties judge. People wonder why our world's going to crap, well right here is why. You can't even trust in your justice system.

A one year sentence and 8 months actually served does not seem normal for repeatedly sexually molesting a child over a 7 month period. Must of been some 'extenuating circumstances' relating to the predator which were more important than justice for the victim.

A year in jail for an animal who sexually assaulted his 6 year old daughter, and then he doesn't even have to serve the year. I really shouldn't demean animals by comparing them to this guy, he's lower than any animal. Excuse me while I go throw up.
