HIGH AND DRY – Rain is the only dampness the Whitehorse Lions Splash Park is experiencing these days. June 14 will mark 10 years since the popular playtime facility was officially opened to delighted youngsters.

The Whitehorse Lions Splash Park in Rotary Peace Park downtown could be dry for some time to come.

It’s June, but the spray toys, buckets and water cannons that make up the splash park have not yet been turned on due to frost that’s still in the ground.

“We are at the mercy of the weather,” Doug Hnatiuk, the city’s manager of parks and community development, explained in an interview Tuesday.

The past two years saw warmer temperatures come earlier in the spring, he noted. Thus, the pipes to the splash park could have the valves opened and water flowing much earlier in the season.

This year, the frost has yet to melt – particularly with cooler temperatures overnight.

Though Yukoners have enjoyed warmer springs the past two years, Hnatiuk said there have also been previous years when the splash park hasn’t had water flowing until later in June.

He estimated things are about a week behind normal for the park this year.

Aw - that really is too bad. The kids are usually having fun in the water this time of year. It sure is a late spring. Frost has also been having a negative impact on the government for some time...
