Air North and its flight attendants have reached a tentative contract agreement, it was announced Friday afternoon.

President Steve Geick of the Yukon Employees’ Union explained this morning there are two meetings scheduled for the 25 to 30 attendants to vote on the package: Thursday and a week from tomorrow.

Air North president Joe Sparling said today the board of directors will review the tentative agreement once the union pulls together all the different issues the parties agreed to in the year of negotiations and presents the agreement for the board’s review.

Geick said both bargaining teams are recommending approval of what would be the first collective agreement for the attendants.

The inability to reach an agreement since negotiations began last October went public two weeks ago when the flight attendants announced they would be conducting job action to show their frustration over the time it was taking.

After two days of job action, flight attendants ceased the display of their displeasure and the parties returned to the bargaining table three days later on Oct. 3.

The union president said they negotiated through that weekend and last week.

“We continued Thursday until after midnight and we came back Friday morning and by 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. we had an agreement,” Geick explained.

He said approval of the agreements requires a minimum of 51 per cent of the attendants voting in favour.

Both parties have agreed not to discuss terms of the deal until the deal has been accepted.

During its job action, the union explained the outstanding matters in contract negotiations boiled down to wages, benefits and scheduling.

“There is not much to say at this point until the thing gets ratified,” Sparling said. “Then we can talk about it a little more.

“We are glad to put it behind us.”

Sparling said the matter was a distraction for the company, particularly in the last couple of weeks.

“So it was good to get that out of the way and get on with business.”

The flight attendants voted to unionize in February 2013.

The attendants are the only unionized segment of Air North’s workforce.

I had family members in wars going back to the first world war. I agree with the statement by Jack. Also from my experience this individual is causing a mess in the Yukon Employees Union.

Who is the fool wearing the poppy on the collar? Absolutely disgraceful attitude towards our war dead. The poppy is not a fashion Symbol or statement.
From RCL Website ´The Poppy is always worn on the left breast, close to the heart´.
