The largest distributor of electricity in the Yukon is continuing to struggle with its accounts system.

Customers have been taking to social media for more than a month now to complain about ATCO Electric Yukon’s billing system.

Most are complaining about extra charges tacked onto their bills.

ATCO manager Tony Badry said, “ATCO Electric Yukon made upgrades to its customer information and billing system in August 2023.

“The upgrade was necessitated by the end-of-life status of our previous system, which served us well for 30 years.

“A considerable amount of meticulous planning preceded this change to ensure a high degree of accuracy and a seamless experience for our customers – ultimately, over 98 per cent of accounts were successfully transitioned,” Badry said.

“As with any significant change in technology or systems, we have encountered some unforeseen challenges along the way that regrettably have resulted in a small number of billing errors to just under two per cent of customers.”

Badry said ATCO is working on addressing the problem.

“Our team has been and continues to actively work to rectify any billing discrepancies and minimize their impact on these customers,” he said.

“We encourage anyone who has questions or concerns about their electric statement to contact us directly for clarification and assistance.”

I tried calling them when I didn’t receive my monthly bill, it came a week late and they charged me a late fee and blamed Canada Post.

Those bills should have 28 day net payment not a week like they currently do.

Also, for the first time ever I had 2 ‘estimated’ bills which were ludicrously high right at Christmas then the true bill came on the 3rd month and it was $50.

I pay so much a month to Atco (automatic payments)- they are still charging me late charges. This has to stop - I will go back to just paying the bill when it comes in!!!!!!!!!

I get the sense that the late payment policy is a scam for more revenue, especially when the bill arrives in the mail just a day or two before it comes due. Adjust the billing and mailing system to provide adequate time for ratepayers to make their payments within the 30 day terms.

Glad I installed all those energy-efficient light bulbs timers and insolation in my walls and attic that we were all encouraged to do to offset electrical use. we would really be gouged today. Go green go green we are trying but you are charging too much. If we could only make ATCO Yukon owned again
