With one flash of the foot, Jake Hanson secured the championship for Yukon Brewing F.C.

The Whitehorse over-35 mens club edged Calgary Rangers F.C. 1-0 in the final game to take home the Cochrane Cup from the 19th annual soccer tournament held outside Calgary from Sept. 17-18.

"We dominated the play and just kept on missing our finishes, kept putting it over the net,” said Grant Zazula, Yukon Brewing F.C. forward/manager. "Two were stopped on the goal line by defenders.”

Hanson's winning strike smacked off the inside of the post, narrowly crossing the goal line.

"He put it off the post, went directly sideways and just snuck inside the opposite post, from the top of the (18-yard) box,” Zazula said. "We heard it ring and went,

‘Ooooh!' and it fell across the goal line, so we were pretty excited.”

Many of the games were close, he pointed out, because Yukon Brewing's forwards had difficulty finishing.

There were 40 teams spread across four divisions – open men's and women's and over-35 men's and women's – in the tournament. The over-35 division featured nine clubs.

Yukon Brewing conceded just one goal in four games on their road to victory.

The Yukoners began their campaign with a 3-0 win over the Cochrane Rangers, followed by a 1-1 draw with the Calgary Northwest Rangers in game two of the opening round.

That pitted Yukon Brewing against the Red Deer Masters in the semi-finals, a tough team stacked with Croatian players.

"They were big, strapping boys,” Zazula said. "That game could have gone either way.”

But Justin Carre found the net twice – his team-leading second and third goals of the tourney – to lift Whitehorse into the finals. Chris Ross and Phil Jackson found the net in the opening match. Ross added his second of the tournament in the following game.

Yukon Brewing F.C.'s latest victory is part of a three-year campaign that began with a win at the Penticton Soccer Club Oldtimer's Thanksgiving Tournament last fall in B.C.

Zazula and captain/centreback Brad Martin agreed much of the credit for the club's Outside success goes to coach Simon Pulido.

"The idea was to step it up this year, go to a slightly more competitive tournament,” Martin said. "And we'll probably try to shoot for something bigger next year.”
