Air North flying to new heights

The men in blue from Air North Rangers swept aside Driving Force with ease in Saturday’s men’s Over-35’s soccer action, winning 7-3.

Miles Hume was the architect-in-chief of Driving Force’s destruction, as he scored four goals with Air North overwhelming the opposition.

The recent revival of Air North’s fortunes is due to a more organized formation where each player knows their role on the team. They buzzed around the Driving Force squad, not allowing them to have any time on the ball and picking off errant passes when they did finally gain possession.

Driving Force were suffering from a short bench due to injuries and suspension, but started brightly as Gareth Howells scored a goal from distance, but as they tired, Air North’s extra stamina proved vital with Derek Funk, with two, and Ciran Connolly finding the back of the net.

However, Guliano Rayo hadn’t given up the cause for the Force, as he scored two goals in the final few minutes of the game.

Chetcuti rounds off comeback
for Yukoninfo.com

Will Chetcuti is a man with a never-say-die attitude and this was shown as Yukoninfo.com clawed themselves back from the brink, turning around a dire situation to win 4-3 over Yukon Brewing. In a game where Yukoninfo.com found themselves down early, Chetcuti scored what turned out to be to be the winner as he volleyed past the excellent James McCullough in the Brewing net.

Chetcuti formed a formidable partnership with Gord the ‘Jam Man’ Barker and Ciaran Connolly in the Yukoninfo.com midfield.

Connolly put in arguably the most complete performance that the league has ever seen. He played for 50 mins without a break; he chased, harassed and tackled in defence, and passed, created space and scored on the attack. Other players were worn out just watching him perform.

Yukon Brewing scored through Phil Jackson and were led well by Marcelo Gortari, who hit for two goals as they built up a useful lead, but were pegged back by a quick-fire Eric Murphy double before Chetcuti’s deciding goal.

KBS wins goal-fest

The game between Klondike Business Solutions (KBS) and Pepsi was a wonderful advert for attacking soccer as 16 goals were scored in a breathless encounter that saw no fewer than three players scoring hat tricks.

KBS skipper Greg Grady is the kind of leader that leads from the front and did so with four goals. He celebrated all his goals with a little jig before rushing back to his bench to the acclaim of his players. Grady was aided and abetted by Pat Zuccarini and Ash Jordan, with two apiece, and Creed Swan as KBS scored with almost every attack.

Pepsi, on the ropes for much of the contest, were counter-punching well as Danny Macdonald and Steve McGovern picked up three goals each with one for River Walton. The watching supporters were treated to end-to-end action with no thought of defending or holding on to the lead.

Sean Macdonald, in the KBS net, who had only let in 12 goals up to this point, was tormented by his brother’s team, but had the last laugh when the final whistle blew, with KBS outlasting Pepsi 9-7.
