The annual Whitehorse Rapids over 35’s pre-season soccer tournament was won by Graham White’s Green team. They timed their run for the title perfectly, coming from last place in the round robin to take the trophy in style.

The tournament had four teams, using the fast and furious format.

Each game only lasted 14 minutes, but was high on drama and goals. John Macphail’s Red team opened the tournament with a win over Giuliano Rayo’s Yellow jerseys with the skipper picking up the opening goal, while Mark O’Brien’s Blue destroyed White’s Green team, although the boys in green would be laughing last.

As the games progressed it was clear to see that the Blues and Reds were the teams to beat but come the playoffs the form book was ripped up. White lead his team to victory over the Blues, with Rob Florkiewicz putting in a barnstorming performance and a very well taken goal.

The other game ended with a penalty shootout after the game had finished tied at 1-1. Unfortunately, Phil Jackson missed for the red team and with the yellows scoring they moved onto the final.

Momentum is a wonderful thing and Green team had it in abundance.

All the previous mistakes had been rectified and the skipper was flying around the pitch close to the speed of sound, making it very difficult to gain control.

The tournament was a big success, getting the players match fit for the upcoming season, although Macphail reported afterwards that he was having trouble walking down the stairs.

Registration for the league is still open for anyone interested in joining.
