Corbin Mitchell was the first runner to cross the finish line of the Klondike Trail of '98 International Road Relay.

In doing so, Mitchell and the rest of his teammates on the Juneau-based Tsunami broke a youth category record with a time of five hours, 50 minutes.

"It was pretty cool,” Mitchell said moments after crossing the finish line.

"Very cool.

"I guess I'm not so exhausted that I couldn't do it, but I'm pretty tired.”

That time was more than 45 minutes faster than the previous record, set by the Whitehorse-based team JustKIDing, which posted a time of 6:35:22 in last year's road relay.

"It feels pretty good, actually, yeah,” Tsunami captain Ryan Moritz said.

"We trained for a while, and it was worth it.”

The group – who was running in their first-ever Trail of '98 – is a U14 soccer team in the Alaska capital, and have known each other since pre-school.

"We have a soccer team and we're mainly getting fit for it,” said Moritz, who ran Leg 8A. "It was just a fun thing to do; it's good for you.”

Since Juneau is isolated, the team travels when they can.

But more important than getting down over the lack of game experience, controlling aspects of the game when you can are important, Moritz said.

"It's better to get stronger on the things that you can control than the things you can't, like get more competitions,” he said.

How was your first Klondike Road Relay?

"It was kind of hard,” Moritz replied. "You just have to give whatever you have left at the very end. Almost everybody sprinted at the end (of their legs). You've just got to think, ‘There's nothing else after this.'''
