Macdonald reigns supreme over Driving Force

Danny MacDonald has had a tough year.

Danny MacDonald has had a tough year. His side have struggled for consistency, which has meant he has to paper over the cracks, playing in multiple positions.

However, this week he was able to play further forward and he did so with deadly accuracy with three goals, as his side YukonInfo.com ran over a disorganised Driving Force team 5-1 in over 35’s soccer action.

Macdonald was aided by Derek Funk, who is regarded as the fastest player over one yard in the league, who picked up two goals.

Driving Force were a shadow of their former greatness, they have lost that sharpness they had earlier in the season and were easily brushed aside by an improving Yukon Info side, with only Greg Grady scoring for them.

Yukon Info are looking to drag themselves off the basement, and with a few more results like this, they will pass teams who are out of form and get themselves a more favourable draw in the playoffs.

Pepsi shock Air North Rangers

In probably the biggest upset in the league so far, Pepsi held Air North to a 3-3 tie in the second game of the weekend.

Pepsi who were rinsed by Yukon Brewing last week, came into this game low in confidence and were up against the runaway leaders.

It looked like a forgone conclusion that they would lose this game, but they played with heart and spirit even though for most of the game they were behind.

Part time acrobat Mark O Brien had a great game leading his team, and there were big performances from Pat Zuccarini and J P Ladroe who both scored, as did the effervescent James McCullough who continues to play at a high level, even though he is now one of the  senior statesman of the league.

Air North scored some nice goals through Marcelo Gortari, Ciaran Connolly and Huy Ngugen, but were unable to hold on for the win.

Their miserable day got worse when Air North skipper Iain Breckenridge, was awarded a third yellow card for the season for a rash challenge and will miss their next game.

KBS put up a
defensive masterclass

Riexinger, Brown and Barker may sound like a dodgy law firm, but they were the foundation of a classic rearguard action, as Klondike Business Solutions beat Yukon Brewing 4-3 in a hard fought game at the Canada Games Centre.

Thomas Riexinger, on loan from Driving Force, had an immense game, flinging himself left and right to deny the Brew’s forwards time and again.

Jim Brown and Gord Barker also put in a massive effort to break up the opposition’s rhythm, which led to counter attacks that were successful as Matthias Hartmann two, John MacPhail and JP Ladroue all scored when they caught Yukon Brewing up the field.

Yukon Brewing’s Gabe Stetkiewicz was in top shooting form, drilling two identical goals from distance, and there was a late goal from Miles Hume.

But it wasn’t enough to turn the tide, as a big yellow wall enveloped Yukon Brewing everytime they came forward.

Both teams gave everything in pursuit of a win, showing what a great advert the over 35’s league is for soccer in Whitehorse.
