Five Yukon Judo athletes attended the Steveston Shiai Invitational tournament in Richmond, B.C. at the end of November.

It was a large competition with nearly 500 registered competitors.

The event was a great opportunity to use the new skills learned at the October training camp put on by Judo B.C. and Olympians Jessica Klimkait and Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard.

All five Yukon athletes competed in the Under-16 division.

Leah McLean, Andrzej Benson, and Roman Zazula competed in the Novice division, while the Hinchey sisters, Jaymi & Lia, competed in the regular division.

McLean dominated the -63kg to win gold, Zazula captured silver in the -55kg, and Jaymi Hinchey brought home a silver in -57kg.

Judo has a small group of athletes, so getting to compete against other clubs is an important aspect of their development.

Aaron Jenson, the high-performance coach out of Shiroumakai Judo club, plans to take the competitors to B.C. provincials in early February, provided COVID-19 protocols allow it.
