Saturday’s Over-35 Men’s Soccer League games featured a battle of the top two teams in the league. Here are the results:

Understrength KBS hold
Yukoninfo.com

In a top of the table clash, leaders Yukoninfo.com took on second place Klondike Business Solutions in over 35’s soccer action. The game was as tight as the final score of 2-2 suggests, as both teams fought hard to gain superiority over the other.

Sean Macdonald in the KBS net was in top form, commanding the penalty box like Napoleon, not letting anyone in without his assent. The only times he was beaten were by deflections close to the goal. The first was an own goal scored by Andrzej Jablonski – who will need another 26 own goals to go past John MacPhail’s league record. The second was tipped in by Will Chetcuti.

KBS were playing with a short bench, but were giving everything for the cause. Jablonski was immense, not caring about his personal welfare as he literally put his body in the line of fire.

Michael Zuccarrini picked up a goal for KBS, while Greg Grady atoned for an earlier easy miss with a goal that brought the game level.

Driving Force stun Pepsi

Underdogs Driving Force produced the kind of display you only witness in movies. They were so good that Pepsi were willing the ref to blow the whistle to end their misery.

The game started brightly for both sides, as both keepers were called into action early on. Stu Knaack pulled off some great saves for Pepsi, while George Maratos was doing his normal Superman impression, as he saved a certain goal by stopping a point blank range shot from Justin Carre.

As the game progressed, you could see the confidence flooding through Driving Force. They were quick and direct, passing and moving around the lead-footed Pepsi players. Keith Welch had a great game, his positivity oozing to his teammates. Jesse Koeller was a constant menace and picked up two goals, as did renaissance man Guliano Rayo, whose goals were the product of slick build up play. Huy Nguyen got the other goal for the Force.

Danny Macdonald and River Walton got a goal apiece for Pepsi.

Brown the heartbreaker

Jim Brown’s goal a few minutes before the end of the game ensured that Yukon Brewing would take home all three points as they beat Air North Rangers 3-2 in the final game of the morning. Brown had opened the scoring and was in abrasive form all around the park, and Fabian Glyka scored an excellent goal to help his team establish a healthy two goal advantage.

The Brew failed to capitalize, which drew Air North back into the game, as they slowly started to string a few passes together. First Ciaran Connolly, then Phil Jackson scored to level the game.

Air North will wish that skipper Iain Breckenridge wasn’t the furthest man forward as he managed to miss kick the ball only inches away from the goal as Air North were pushing for the victory.

The result leaves Air North searching for their first win of the season, and Yukon Brewing within sight of the leaders.
