All ages are invited for Tennis Yukon's Family Red Court Challenge as part of Sports Day in Canada at the Mount McIntyre courts on Saturday.
The games will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and be played on the smaller nets and courts using softer tennis balls.
The games, which are offered for free, will be played on the smaller nets and courts using softer tennis balls.
"The idea being that an entire family from five-years-old to 75-year-old grandparents could come up and play together and have some fun,” Tennis Yukon president Stacy Lewis said.
"That's going to be our part in Sports Day in Canada.”
The second-annual Sports Day in Canada will be a day-long national celebration of sport, focused on getting active and participation. CBC will carry all the festivities during a six-hour television and online broadcast starting at noon EST.
A major goal for Sports Day in Canada is to get more Canadians embracing physical activity and the power of sport. According to the Canadian Health Measures Survey released earlier this year, 15 per cent of Canadian adults get the recommended levels of moderate-to-vigorous activity per week and seven per cent of children and youth (aged five to 17) get the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily.
Tennis Yukon did participate in Sports Day last year in the Flexihall at the Canada Games Centre, Lewis said. But because of the new court surfaces – unveiled before the Territorial Championships in August – and the moderate level, the group decided to take it outside.
"I've always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to have a grandparent-grandchild event,” Lewis said. "In September is Grandparents Day – I know that's a Hallmark holiday and everything – but it does give you something to work from.
"And this idea with the red courts and the soft ball really allows you to play a game with your grandkids, there's not very many sports where that can happen. I've had that idea for a number of years, and that seems like a great opportunity to go ahead with it.”
