The culmination of the Filipino Canadian Basketball League of Yukon Under 35 championship was played Sunday afternoon at the Canada Games Centre.

It was a win or go home game between Domino’s Pizza and Elias Dental who were tied at one in the best of three title series.

In the previous week’s action, Elias Dental extended the series after cruising to a 73-62 win. Domino’s took the first game of the best-of-three matchup 80-69.

Unphased by the loss in the second week, Domino’s came out the aggressor, built an early lead that was never challenged and took the game and the championship trophy 70-58.

During the previous matchups, the pizza crew saw success when they implemented a fullcourt press. In the eliminator game, they utilized the press from the opening tip-off.

Because of the press, Domino’s was able to disrupt Elias Dental’s offensive game plan. From the hop, Domino’s was picking off passes and turning them into transition buckets.

When they had to play in the halfcourt against Elias Dental’s two-one-two zone, Domino’s was effective driving the ball and passing out to shooters behind the three-point arc. Last week, that shot wasn’t walling for them but that wasn’t the case Sunday. The three-pointers were falling for the Domino’s crew and they were quickly up by double-digits in the opening stanza.

When Elias Dental managed to break the press they had to contend with the Domino’s zone defence – which effectively shut off the paint and closed out on shooters.

Elias Dental made it a point to get the ball into the low blocks to let their post players go to work. Domino’s was up to the task, staying on their feet and not giving an inch of space.

In the second quarter, Domino’s continued to grow their advantage.

Their defence was relentless and on offence, they scored in any number of ways, drives, transition, and threes. The lead ballooned above twenty when the halftime buzzer sounded.

Although down, Elias Dental still had plenty of fight left. Shots that weren’t falling in the first started to drop and when they missed, they crashed the offensive boards for put-backs. Elias was able to slowly chip away at the lead with one quarter to go.

In the fourth, Domino’s got back to doing what made them successful – the press. They clamped down and their lead wasn’t threatened again. When the game ended, they were up by 12.

Domino’s had four players score in double digits. Bryan Hermosa led all scorers with 20. Ralph Hermosa added 14, Josh Rumbaoa, 12 and Ian New 10.

Jo Aying led Elias Dental with 18 points. Bon Bon Posecion chipped in 14.

The Mythical 5, or the playoff all-star team was; Bryan Hermosa and Rumbaoa from Domino’s, Aying from Elias Dental, Viernes Janitorial’s Aaron Diaz and Kevin Hopkins from Silver.

The MVP of the season was Rumbaoa. The finals MVP was Bryan Hermosa.

The playoffs were the continuation of the FCBLY’s 13th season which had to be stopped early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

FCBLY action continues this weekend when the Over 35 league and Under 15 leagues resume play.
