Cornerstone Construction hung on to triumph over Tri-Omni Property Management 115-111 in an entertaining affair Saturday evening at F.H. Collins in Whitehorse.

Cornerstone captured the Filipino Canadian Basketball League Yukon (FCBLY) 35 Under title two games to one in the best-of-three finals.

This despite playing with only five men on the court and no subs to give them a break. Tri-Omni had two subs on their bench.

The game was tight in the first half, with the score knotted at 46 with 1:07 left to play in the second quarter.

Tr-Omni led 52-51 at the half.

Cornerstone took over in the second half, opening up a 87-69 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Their lack of subs may have been a factor in the fourth, as Tri-Omni rallied to make it close at the end, with EJ New pumping in layup after layup, but it wasn't enough, as the depleted Cornerstone squad held on for the win and the title.

The short-staffed Cornerstone squad earned the trophy with a valiant effort, with Genard Hermosa limping in the second half on what appeared to be a twisted ankle.

Cornerstone's Kevin Octavio was the top scorer in the game with 40 points, thanks to deadly outside shooting. Bryan Hermosa pumped in 37 points, and Ralph Hermosa added 27.

Top scorer for Tr-Omni was Josh Rumbaoa with 30 points. Jo Aying netted 27 points, despite fouling out of the game with less than two minutes left. EJ New also laid in 27 points and Christian Miral chipped in with 12.

Octavio was named the Finals MVP.

The game completed the FCBLY's 14th season of basketball in the Yukon, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

FCBLY Director Joesel Rumbaoa advised that he will let the Star know when the league will open their 15th season, as they are waiting for an update from the Yukon Government.
