Wednesday saw more Canyon City Hockey League action at the Canada Games Centre, starting with the Hyland Electric Bolts taking on the Dirty Northern (Public House) Muckers.

The game featured two of the leagues most dynamic players, in Marc “Flash” Emond for the Bolts, and Jordan “Pants” Moore for the Muckers. Both teams came out flying in the first period, and were hitting the bars, crossbars that is, pretty hard. However, it was the Bolts who surged to a first period lead courtesy of goals scored by George “Dadda” Maratos, Dave “Big D” Barrett, and Flash himself.

The second period saw some great chances on both ends of the ice, with Mucker goalie Brian “Real Deal” Beal keeping the Muckers close. Eventually the Muckers were served too many shots from the Bolts, and the score got too tipsy for the Muckers to handle.

Scoring for the Bolts in the second period were Eric Clementõs, Matt ‘007’ Van Lankveld, and Dadda, who scored a highlight reel goal. While battling behind the Muckers net, Dadda banked the puck off the net, then did a Savardian spin-o-rama in front where he put home a backhand past a completely screened Beal.

At the other end of the ice, the Bolts goalie, Kenny ‘Hacksaw’ Lindsay, who signed a one game contract in exchange for two cold ones, had a solid game in what was his second shutout of the season.

Post-game, Lindsay commented, “In this league, any team can win on any given night. Tonight just happened to be our night.”

Case in point, the Muckers had their chances, including a brilliant play in which Angus ‘The Bull’ Cathcart snuck behind the Bolts defence, for a breakaway, but he was unable to tickle the twine. The game ended in a 6-0 victory for the Bolts, who have won back-to-back games for the first time this season. Of note, the shutout was the first in Bolts franchise history.

Game 2: The second game on Wednesday saw the All-In Exploration/Mylner Electric Mad Trappers take on the Precision Eavestroughing Predators.

The Predators have been lurking, trying to hammer down a win since the start of the year, but in their way stood a well prepared Trappers team.

The first period saw some back and forth, which was highlighted by an epic goaltending battle. On one end of the ice, the Preds had Sam ‘Snowman’ Oettli (pronounced Ott-lee) between the pipes, and on the other end of ice stood Jaiden “Dubee” Dubois, an early CCHL Vezina favourite. However, Dubois had his work cut out for him in this game.

The Preds took a 2-1 lead into the second period thanks to goals scored by Josh “Hurricane” Schroeder, and Creed “Vicious” Swann. Scoring for the Trappers in the first period was Trapper co-captain, Riley Gibson.

The second period almost saw the tarps come off, as both teams saw some time in the sin bin. Nonetheless, both teams hunkered down and exchanged chances in end-to-end action, that saw little time spent in the neutral zone. Despite another goal by Gibson`s finest, Trapper Riley-G, as well as Scott “The Lego Block” Legg, it was the Predators who found a way to stay in front of the Trappers. Scoring for the Predators in the second period was Stevie ‘Eazy-A’ Anderson, and Trevor ‘Swifty’ Smith.

The game wasn’t all flash in the offensive end, as the defence core also had some stellar plays. For instance, post-game Snowman was sure to point out a brilliant play by Preds defenceman Jordan Youngs, who batted a puck that beat Oettli, and was heading in, out of the air in Crosby-like fashion.

However, in the end, it was the Trappers who became prey in a 4-3 Predators win.

Next CCHL action takes place on Saturday, when the Dirty Northern Muckers take on the Yukon Benefits Sundogs at 8:45pm at the Canada Games Centre.
