The eighth annual Burl Cup Canada Day Disc Golf Challenge saw 48 disc golfers, a new Cup record, vied to get their names etched on the trophy of the same name at the Marsh Lake Community Centre.
Carl Pearce, the Burl Cup organizer and designer of the 18 hole, par 54 course, said usually, the event draws 15-20 disc golfers. He attributed the jump in numbers to two factors.
“Disc golf is an exploding sport in the territory,” said Pearce. “And, right now people have a lack of options. Usually, they’d be in Alaska or down in B.C.”
At the end of 18 holes, there was a two-way tie for first between Jamie Roddick and Jessie Devost, however, only one person can get their named etched on the Burl Cup.
The pair headed into a playoff round, where it was Roddick who came out the victor after shooting a birdie on the second playoff hole.
Before heading out to the tees, the disc golfers pitched in for an ace pot. Kevin Olson aced hole 8 and secured the $28.
Olson’s ace was only the second recorded in Burl Cup hole-in-one.
Noel Sinclair hit the first ace in 2018 also on hole 8.
Normally after the round of disc golf is played, the Marsh Lake Community Centre has a band playing and a barbecue to celebrate Canada Day, which the Burl Cup tags onto.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, these festivities were put on ice but Pearce said he’s hopeful that the Burl Cup will be in full effect for next year’s rendition.
