In an absorbing final game of the season, the spectators witnessed Air North take on Klondike Business Solutions in over 35’s soccer action.

Air North ultimately took the spoils as they won both the league and the playoffs to complete a remarkable double.

On Saturday, Air North were indebted to Jan Aalt van den Hoorn in their net as he stopped countless shots with his body. He must have woken up Sunday morning black and blue with all his bruises.

It got to the point where golden boot winner Matthias Hartmann was passing instead of shooting.

Ciaran Connolly scored the only goal of the game, and what a goal it was, as he curled the ball into the top corner, in probably the only place that KBS keeper Stephen Doyle couldn’t get it.

KBS had about 75 per cent of the possession and territory but try as they might, they couldn’t get past van den Hoorn.

When Air North did attack, Doyle had to be at the top of his game to extinguish the threat.

The 1-0 scoreline was the lowest aggregate score in one game all season, and shows how close in ability the two best teams in the league were.

Meanwhile, in the playoff to determine third and fourth place, Driving Force overcame Yukoninfo.com 3-2, in a game that was low on subs but high on quality.

Keith Maguire, Phil Jackson and Hector Lang scored goals for Driving Force, while Danny Macdonald and Graham White got on the scoresheet for Yukoninfo.com.

In the end of season awards ceremony, Hartmann won both the Golden Boot award and the MVP trophy.

George Maratos won best keeper and Andy Todd won the Fair Play award.

Juergen Korn was voted captain of the over 50’s team. Voted to the team as well was Gord Barker, Mark O Brien, Charlie Hoeller, Dale Cheeseman and John Macphail.
