Although Lotteries Yukon officials are not yet able to officially confirm it, Whitehorse resident Scott McCarthy won $1 million last week.

Lotteries Yukon spokesperson Carol Arntzen said at noon today she was able to confirm that a $1-million Set for Life winning ticket was purchased by a Whitehorse resident.

The ticket is still going through the validation process and all information will be made public this Thursday, she said.

On Friday, McCarthy publicly stated on a local radio station he's won $1 million.

McCarthy, a local grocer and well-known weightlifter who won a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, is currently in Alberta claiming his prize and could not be reached for comment.

At the time of publication, it was not known whether McCarthy's wife and two children have accompanied him to Alberta.

Sam Jurovich, the owner of Bigway Foods in Whitehorse where McCarthy works, confirmed today that one of his employees has indeed won the lottery but that he was unable to provide any details.

'He's going to have a press conference on Thursday,' he said.
