Women receive harassing calls
Five women in the Whitehorse area have complained to the RCMP after receiving lewd and sexually suggestive anonymous phone calls.
Five women in the Whitehorse area have complained to the RCMP after receiving lewd and sexually suggestive anonymous phone calls.
Whitehorse RCMP Const. Christine Grant said today the calls happened between Jan. 26 and Feb. 15.
It doesn't appear the women were specifically targeted or are in anyway connected, Grant said.
"Clearly, someone is just going through the phone book and picking numbers,” she said.
The calls are coming to landlines found in the phone book, not cellphones, she added.
Police believe the calls came from the same person.
If anyone receives similar calls, he or she should let the police know, Grant said.

"I got the call". Your comment about the RCMP, "they probably spend more time thinking about their order at starbucks..." How dare you! Perhaps they were knocking on someone's door to tell them their child was killed in a car accident. Or going to a home to seize street drugs so they won't get sold to your kids. Or tending to a death at a local pool and talking with the friends left behind. You need to be heard, yes, but a comment such as that about the RCMP is low and unfair!

Seriously "I got the call", you expect the police to dedicate time to this? An already extended police force simply can not referee this kind of thing. They have sexual assaults, domestic violence calls, and impaired drivers to deal with. There are just some things that people must handle themselves and deal with it. This is one of them.

Regarding the last comment from Rob Mcphie. The story was printed because it is Sexual Harassment and it is against the law. More than one person have received these calls and that is why it was put in the Newspaper as an article. Your sarcastic comments on bringing in the FBI, CIA and the SWAT team just shows your ignorance on Sexual Harassment. Maybe educate yourself before writing in ignorant remarks. Shame on you for your insults.

1950's anyone? on Mar 1, 2013 at 8:17 am
Hey Rob, how's your 1950's (obviously single) life going in the 2010's?
If it's your momma getting these calls I'd bet you'd be changing your tune!

Listen Rob, clearly you have never felt violated or threatened, and that must be a nice warm fuzzy feeling for you.
I wish Whitehorse Star would have chosen not to post your comment that mocks MY feelings of threat but hey that's free speech I suppose.
It is my opinion that your ignorant and hurtful response is basically condoning what this guy did to make some women feel threatened enough to call the cops. You may as well have said I should just shut my mouth and stay in the kitchen.
And because YOU weren't on the other line, I can assure you it was not a teenager that made the call, it was man.
My point with the statement about the police was they probably spend more time thinking about their order at starbucks than they did with a concerned call from a citizen being harassed.

I love the last sentence in the statement made by "I got the call".
"So thanks cops for cracking down on the real crimes that take place in Whitehorse!"
I think the FBI and CIA should be notified as soon as possible! We should also have another 500 officers assigned to this case. Have S.W.A.T on stand by and get undercover agents out searching for this prank caller. The sheer terror to the families in this case I can only imagine is absolutely staggering..Put your self in the victims situation..imagine getting 4 sexual "prank calls" in a ROW! ..absolutely terrifying!
The city needs to set up a support program for these victims and please, spare no expense ...
Lets all pray that this sick, twisted, individual is brought to justice. I for one hope they seek the death penalty.
There is probably some teenage kid laughing his ass off at being the "prank caller" ...
I'm can't believe this is even actually news! Lol

For those judgemental men who commented about the ridiculousness of this story (and Jackie), because it happened to me, I appreciated this story being written. Its comforting to know it didn't just happen to me and it wasn't a one off. He called from a blocked number, he called 4 times. it started at 11:30 pm and I would hang up and he called right back. Not answering didn't help, he called back again 3 more times. I got tired of it and told my hubby what happened who then answered the 4th phone call in a ROW and the perve didn't call back.
I called the cops and they suggested I *67 it. When I told him I was pretty sure that one would have to be subscribed in order to use *67 (thanks NWtel, this should be a pay per use feature), THE COP ARGUED with me about this fact and then said that there was nothing I could really do. So thanks cops for continuing to crack down on the real crimes that occur in Whse.

News? Love it, Whitehorse Star should do more of these tidbits just to get me laughing. I wish the communication entrepenur phones me, I could have some fun like Charlie K. People are to serious about nothing all the time. Go pay some taxes to justify your existence to be serious. Everyone loves and uses that line " I PAY TAXES!" Good for you, here is a ribbon.

Is this really news? What about the harrassing calls I get from my ex? Can you do a write up about that? My feelings got hurt so that should be a starting point.

If this person blocks his number, you won't be able to trace it, but you could do the next best thing. My friend's wife received a call from this creep too...so my friend's wife passed the phone to her husband (my friend) while the creep was being rude and sexually explicit...and my friend told the guy..."I don't know about you but I'm getting kind of hot, just let me loosen my clothes a bit", and the male creep hung up the phone immediately not realizing he was talking to a guy. They never got a phone call back again. ha ha

To Call Display, I don't think there is one person living in the Yukon who doesn't have call display, the person is calling from a blocked number.

I received these type of calls back in 1982. At first I would just hang up. Then one call came at about 4am while I was sleeping. Instead of saying hello or waiting for the man to start talking, I screamed: Do you know what time it is? I'm sleeping and how dare you call me in the middle of the night. I may have used some vulgar language as well. I never got any more calls after that incident. Too bad there was no call display back then.
