Liberals would double tourism budget

The Yukon needs to see more tourists, Don Inverarity, the MLA and Liberal election candidate for Porter Creek South, said today.

The Yukon needs to see more tourists, Don Inverarity, the MLA and Liberal election candidate for Porter Creek South, said today.

He spoke at a news conference in front of Up North Adventures this morning.

The Liberal party would double the $5 million the government currently spends on tourism marketing, Inverarity said alongside Cherish Clarke, the Liberal candidate for Takhini-Kopper King.

Inverarity explained that since the mid-1990s, the number of tourists visiting the Yukon has remained almost the same.

In 1993, he said, the territory saw about 306,000 visitors. In 2010, there were around 311,000.

"In light of this stagnation, we should continue to broaden our European reach, and continue to expand our North American markets as well,” he said.

Clarke explained that a large portion of the money would be targeted at arts, culture and sport tourism.

"The money is specifically for marketing in tourism, so advertising overseas, and not specifically at any one business, but making sure this money is promoting Yukon as an attractive tourist destination,” she said.

The Liberals want to also use that money to expand First Nations tourism.

Clarke said that sector of tourism is gong to be taking off in the next couple of years, and the government needs to support that.

Neither Inverarity nor Clarke gave any specific First Nations initiatives they would work on with the extra marketing money.

"It's such a unique, northern First Nations perspective here,” said Clarke. "A lot of people, if they knew more about the culture and the history, they would probably want to partake with the First Nations segment in the Yukon.”

Inverarity agreed.

"It needs to be a team effect. We can't miss out on that cultural heritage that's important to everyone in the Yukon.”

The Liberals are the first party to announce their tourism platform.

With the 2012 Arctic Winter Games quickly approaching, the two candidates said, a Liberal government would provide event organizers with the resources required to ensure the success of this event.

"I'm proud to be part of a team that recognizes how increasing the tourism marketing budget is good for Yukon small businesses, like Up North Adventures,” said Clarke.

"A Liberal government will be here for Yukoners by showcasing our rich cultural heritage and our wealth of natural beauty to promote a strong economic future for our communities and our families.”

If we can't attract more tourists by advertising overseas, then maybe it is time to extend the invitation to our own neighbors. Alaska, northern B.C.

NWT, Alberta etc. They are all at our doorstep. In time of financial hardship worldwide, it would be prudent to target the areas that are closer to us.

In turn, these people will promote the Yukon to others in their regions. But for that to happen, these tourists must be exposed to the full flavor of the Yukon and go back home with a memorable experience. Word of mouth is cheap. No need to double and triple the tourism budget.

Liberals would double a lot of things and it sure won't be doubling the double-downs from KFC. The Government does not create jobs or wealth, the private sector does.

The liberals would also provide funds to advertisers, wow, another adscam coming to a theatre near you.

I agree with all of the above. More money won't help unless there is a change in leadership and direction.

Here is a stat for you:

"The Yukon spends $5 million a year on tourism promotion and attracts 300,000 visitors a year.

Prince Edward Island spends $6 million, and gets 1.2 million people"

Can anyone explain to me how the outrageous salaries and travel perks at Tourism Yukon are justified?

better triple that budget instead...so you can afford to pay those tourism 'professionals' their ridiculous salaries and pay for them to stay in fairmont hotels across the country.

I am glad Mr. Inverarity wants to see more tourists. Because seeing them is all we are going to be doing since we can't accommodate each and everyone. If visitors to our Territory can't find any where to spend the night then they don't spend any time or money in that town.

Last summer 100's of tourist passing through the Territory were met with "I am sorry but we are fully booked tonight! " Hundreds more would call/ email from Skagway , Anchorage, Watson or Dawson trying to reserve a bed in Whitehorse were met with the same comment.

This was especially true on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights ALL last summer. I am not sure where Mr. Inverarity got his information from that YTG marketing is not effective because that is not true. If anything it has been TOO effective.

Travel and tourism are luxuries during tight times. It doesn't matter how much you market it, if people don't have the cash they won't come. Plus, we are not the only jurisdiction competing for these dollars - the competition is stiff these days.

I do not believe that any one business should be subsidized over another - consumers should decide where their dollars go and resident taxpayers should not have to forego programs (and we will - simple math) in order to support 'eco-tourism' or whatever.

If we are currently spending $5 million on tourism marketing, and we have gained zero customers since the 1990's (20 years ago), where exactly is this money going and why would you want to shovel more money into a program that is not working?

My guess is that the money we already spend needs to be audited.

Support the tourism businesses directly in the way they ask to be supported, do not throw more money at consultants and government workers to 'make plans' and travel overseas. Yes, I have talked to tourism operators and I am somewhat aware of how the slush fund works.

I wish the public were more aware of how tourism spends their budget and exactly how much money actually trickles down to the tourism operators to direct as they see fit.

Absolutely no more money to tourism marketing without assessing how the money is currently being spent, and why those expenditures are not resulting in more tourists.

So what programs are the Libs going to cut to pay for all their grand plans? The money has to come from somewhere. Health care? Education?

More Tourist?? on Sep 22, 2011 at 10:42 am

"A Liberal government will be here for Yukoners by SHOWCASING our rich cultural heritage and our wealth of natural beauty to promote a strong economic future for our communities and our families.” We do not need to SHOWCASE "our wealth of natural beauty" and I hope they don't take that phrase too literally and make a lot of stupid laws that keep REAL Yukoners from using the land. Like no ATVs and Skidoo trail laws...

Hmm, I know one thing that is not making sense...

If the parties work with the First Nations as they are claiming they will, Yukon would be a much better place. Currently, everyone is working for their own self interest and that is doing nothing for the territory as a whole.

I also agree, there is lots of culture to showcase in the territory that is not being done.

huh? on Sep 22, 2011 at 6:48 am

Throwing around phrases like "work with First Nations," "partake with First Nations," "First Nations tourism..." is not going to win the election, and I really don't think anyone with this background is fooled. Most of your statements do not make any sense, and they also do not have any tangible, achievable goals attached to them. Please Liberals - stop talking.
