Sixteen people were charged with impaired driving-related offences over the holiday season, according to the Yukon RCMP’s traffic division.
Cpl. Shawn Pollard said this morning 21 people were also given 24-hour driving suspensions due to alcohol and drug consumption.
The RCMP rolled out its holiday-season checkstop program at the end of November with the help of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
Cold December nights saw officers and MADD representatives, as well as Justice Minister Mike Nixon and Yukon chief coroner Kirsten Macdonald, out on the streets of Whitehorse talking to drivers and promoting the cause.
“Just because the holiday season is over doesn’t mean our priority for impaired driving is over,” Pollard said.
“You can continue to see checkstops throughout the year, and not always on the main routes.
“It is a definite priority for the RCMP, both locally and nationally.”

Why do they keep doing it June? Because any penalty they receive seems to be affordable to the offenders and they are anonymous in our communities. You say you'd like to ask them - if you don't know who they are how can you?
I guess more Yukoners will have to die before we get serious with this problem.
The election machine is gearing up and I hope this becomes a plank in the political promises we will be hearing.

What's it going to take for people to learn..I've said my bit, several times, as have many other contributors.. and we have 37 more people driving impaired. It's truly amazing that more of us aren't targets of drunk drivers, dead or injured.
I'd like to ask one of those drunks why they think it's ok to drive impaired because I really don't understand why they keep doing it.
