‘A little traffic circle' being planned for downtown corner

The final design for the intersection at Black Street and Sixth Avenue is nearing completion, says the city engineer.

The final design for the intersection at Black Street and Sixth Avenue is nearing completion, says the city engineer.

Wayne Tuck said today the intersection is likely to include a "traffic calming circle,” as opposed to a traffic control circle, which the other circles in town serve as.

The plan calls for keeping the stop signs at Black and Sixth, he said, adding the traffic circle is designed to slow down traffic.

"We are going to do something there that can be tied into the rest of the Sixth Avenue reconstruction,” said the manager of engineering. "It will not be a major round-about as in the other locations.

"It will basically be a little traffic circle.”

A new Sixth Avenue is also likely to have other traffic calming devices, though not necessarily more traffic circles, he said.

For some, said Tuck, Sixth Avenue has turned into something of a mini-express lane to avoid the Whitehorse Elementary School speed zone on Fourth, motorists turning into the Qwanlin Mall and such.

"They think they can get around that traffic and speed up so they use it as a short-cutting opportunity,” Tuck said.

The speed of traffic on Sixth has been expressed as a concern by local residents, he acknowledged.

He said city officials met recently with residents of Black Street to discuss the ongoing reconstruction project.

Another meeting will be held for residents of the downtown at large to discuss the Black and Sixth intersection and the overall conceptual plans for the redesign of Sixth Avenue when the planning is complete, he said.

Tuck said he expects the public meeting will be held toward the end of this month or early June.

Though the reconstruction of Sixth Avenue is not currently identified as a priority in the city's four-year capital budget cycle to the end of 2015, it has been talked about as something that could happen in the next five years, he said.

"That will be up to priorities identified by city council,” Tuck said. "We will be reviewing it this fall.”

The cost of the traffic circle at Black and Sixth has been included in the $2.43 million awarded for surface and subsurface work this year to complete the reconstruction of Black Street from Fourth Avenue to the clay cliffs.

Phase one from Fourth to Sixth was completed last year.

Has Mr. Tuck ever looked into the additional cost of road maint. around the traffic calming devices. Why not ask maint. how much on going work it is and all the additional equipment require to facilitate this.

Even better send all the people who don't care or are unwilling to learn how to drive properly back to driving school.

Simple if you don't know how to drive you should not be driving...

Great, more tax dollar wasting traffic circles that 80% of the population doesn't know how to use properly.

I have a much better idea. Get rid of all politicians, send them back south where they should fit right in. Whitehorse should then be at least 80% smaller and traffic problems would almost be gone.

The city can't maintain the roads, lines or the crosswalks in Whitehorse now. Why spend money on traffic circles and unnecessary road diversions. Fix the existing hazards first.

The growing population of children who are living downtown and WALKING to Whitehorse elementary will be that much safer. If the rest of the town hates a traffic circle on 6th, then we know it's doing its job!

Steve, How about the cell phone use by persons driving vehicles. Has anyone even heard of someone getting a ticket?

Soon there will be a government worker on every corner telling people how to drive. No one thinks anymore. They are told how to think. Yes, that GREEN light means GO. Not stop in the intersection and get confused.

When will Whitehorse Motors stop using Black St. and Wheeler St. as extensions of their car dealership? When will ByLaw clamp down on the sidewalk bike riders this year especially on Main St.? I had to dodge at least five street goons on bikes this morning on the main drag. These imbeciles should be easy pickings for ByLaw considering they don't wear helmets or show little consideration for the walking public. Confiscate their bikes. While I'm in such a good mood, how about this summer we get ByLaw and the RCMP to enforce the excessive noise bylaw and start ticketing motorcycle bikers blasting through town with that eardrum piercing childish racket.

I used to hate traffic circles. Having been here for several years now I'm beginning to think that we need more of them. Some people in this town drive like morons and they are a danger to themselves and other people. It is normal to see vehicles driving at 30 to 40 km over the speed limit on Hamilton Blvd and the extension...saw a guy in a black truck there yesterday after work who was going about 120km/hr in a 70.

On another note; they had the lanes closed for 2 days on the hill for construction but nobody working there? Was that just an exercise for us on how to merge?

I wonder if Mr. Tuck knows traffic circles only work if people know how to use them.

Also they are not the answer to every traffic problem in Whitehorse.

Look kids, more wasted tax dollars. Nobody wants these dumb circles on every corner in Whitehorse.

Nice to see something happening around town. Maybe they should be looking though at where there are accidents on a more regular basis or where there are people being killed. TRY TAKING A LOOK AT 12TH AVE AND PINE IN PORTER CREEK. Maybe our tax dollars should go to some place like that where it is truly needed.

For those of us who live downtown and mostly get around on foot, Sixth Ave. can be pretty bad. The intersection at Ogilvie is particularly bad during rush hours. Something is needed at that spot - I don't know what would be most appropriate, but lights or a flashing yellow or at least some type of crosswalk might help things.
