Yukon cross-country skier Knute Johnsgaard produced the top Canadian result in today’s 15-km classic race at the World U-23 Championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Johnsgaard finished 21st in the race with a time of 40:58.3, two and a half minutes behind Finnish winner Iivo Niskanen.

“I’m pretty happy with my day,” Johnsgaard told Cross Country Canada officials post-race. “I pushed hard up the last climb and held on to the finish.

“Everyone seemed to go out pretty hard, since this is what we train for all year, so gotta give it all or nothing.”

The 21-year-old said his skis felt good, but added times were spread out between competitors due to the difficulty of the course.

Nineteen-year-old Yukon skier Dahria Beatty is also in Italy, competing in the World Junior Championships.

Beatty finished 27th in yesterday’s 1.2-km sprint, which qualified her for the knockout rounds.

There, she finished 20th, a personal best at the world juniors.
