Two Western Hockey League teams will clash in Whitehorse this winter.
The Kamloops Blazers and Vancouver Giants will square off in a regular-season game on Feb. 12 at the Canada Games Centre as part of Scotiabank’s Hockey Day in Canada, an event that will bring with it national media coverage.
“The WHL is very excited to be part of the Scotiabank CBC Hockey Day in Canada festivities this year in Whitehorse,” WHL commissioner Ron Robinson said.
“This is a rare opportunity to bring the World’s finest junior hockey players to the Yukon and help promote the game in northern Canada.”
The event will feature on-ice clinics for Yukon youth and school visits by WHL players and NHL alumni.
Joel Darling, CBC sports director of production, said the game will be a major part of the lineup.
“With Whitehorse as our host city, fans will get a chance to see up close some of the best junior hockey in the world,” he said.
Volunteer opportunities are available to the public during the Hockey Day in Canada. Volunteer sign up will take place in the lobby of the Canada Games Centre from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 26.
“The City of Whitehorse is honoured and extremely excited to be hosting such an important event,” deputy mayor Ranj Pillai said. “This partnership with the WHL will only add to the excitement that is Scotiabank’s Hockey Day in Canada and help us showcase our community to the rest of Canada.”
The Blazers won the Memorial Cup in 1992, 1994 and 1995, and the Giants captured the cup in 2007 and won the WHL Championship in 2006.
