NICE VIEW - Nancy Thomson, organizer of the Thursday Night Trail Run, poses for a photo on top of Grey Mountain. Thomson hopes to hold next week's race on the mountain.
The weather gods haven’t been co-operating with Nancy Thomson’s plan to hold a Thursday Night Trail Run on Grey Mountain.
For a second straight week, the organizer of the trail series had to change the race location as a result of rainy conditions.
However, thankfully for Thomson and the three other die-hard runners that came out there was some perfectly good trails on Grey Mountain Road.
The run wasn’t timed and wasn’t meant to be competitive, but a good time was still had by all.
Claude Chabot, one of this week’s runners, said he was planning on attending rain or shine.
“I like running in the rain,” he said. “It can be a little cold at the start, but once you get going it’s very pleasant.”
As a result of it not raining overly hard and eventually easing up altogether, the trail, minus a few slippery spots, was in good shape.
Chabot has never run up on Grey Mountain and is looking forward to the challenge.
“It was a bit disappointing just because the weather has been so beautiful,” he said about the second location change. “It would have been gorgeous up there in the sun and with the colours starting to change, but there is always next week.
“Third time lucky.”
Thomson is hoping that will be the case too and plans on trying again next Thursday, starting at 6 p.m.
“I would like lots of people to come out to this run, even though I would rate it a bit more technical because it’s pretty rocky, but just so people could see the view,” Thomson said. “On one end of the summit you can see Lake Laberge, you can see Marsh Lake, you can see Fish Lake. Where else can you be in the capital city and be on the top of a mountain in 20 minutes that’s this beautiful?”
If the weather is nice enough, the run will begin just past the parking area by the transmission tower and will go about four-km before turning around and coming back.
Chabot, who has been running regularly this year, plans on coming out again next week.
“It’s a good social run more than anything, I don’t think of it as a race,” he said.
“Nancy does a superb job of picking all of these different trails and marking them.
“If I was on my own I probably wouldn’t know half of these (trails) existed, so it’s really good she is doing this.”
