FOR ALL AGES – The Intersports Tuesday Night Fun Run really is for participants young and old. Here, the group sets out on the 2.5 to 10-kilometre run on Tuesday evening.

Another evening of summer-like weather on Tuesday brought out another large group of participants in this week’s edition of Athletics Yukon’s Intersport Fun Run and Walk.

“We are delighted that we’ve been averaging about 50 runners and walkers every Tuesday evening and it’s great to see people of all ages involved,” said Athletics Yukon’s president Tanya Astika, after surveying the large crowd of 53 participants.

In many ways, Tuesday night was a running of the Ravens, Badgers, Nanooks and Seawolves as university students from a variety of Canada and U.S. schools dominated most of the running side of the event.

John Parry (University of Alaska at Fairbanks Nanooks) once again saw his star rise to first place overall (17:56) with a mindboggling pace time of 5:45 minutes per mile.

Second place finisher Sam Lindsey (University of Alaska at Anchorage Seawolves), in his first five-kilometre race of the season, showed that his cross country ski legs and lungs are in fine shape even without snow (18:31).

Students at Ontario universities during the school year, Coralie Ullyett (Brock University Badgers) and Brittany Pearson (Carleton University Ravens) tied for first and third place in the women’s five-km run (24:06). They were not far behind first place finisher Shannon Thompson (23:05) and Katie Lowey (23:53) who took second place honours.

Four walkers took on the challenge of the 10-km course. Ruth Hall, having just celebrated a birthday that brought her into a new decade, charged into the finish area to claim first place (1:13:32).

Just 14 seconds behind Hall was Arlene Ogden who took a well deserved silver medal showing both speed and wonderful technique as she crossed the line. First-timers Sheri Blaker and Tracey Arrell tied for third place (1:18:20).
