On Tuesday night, Whitehorse felt like the hottest place north of Las Vegas.
Even a smoking-hot temperature of 30 degrees did not stop over 31 runners and walkers from competing in Athletics Yukon’s weekly Intersport Five km Run and Walk. The event saw not just hot weather, but also some very hot runners.
The men’s side was marked by a couple of top-notch runners as well as gifted athletes from other sports.
Leading the way were the fabulous Carlos brothers.
Running a heart-stopping pace time of 5:15 minutes per mile, former UBC varsity runner Shane Carlos topped the field with a time of 16:22.
Finishing second, Luke Carlos also ran an impressive time (18:08). Carlos just managed to keep Canada Winter Games gold medalist David Greer (18:19) at bay ,making sure that Greer finished behind him in third place.
Greer, now a member of the national cross country ski team, kept fellow cross country skier Sam Lindsay (19:01) at a safe distance. Lindsay placed fourth. Old dog Tom Ullyett rounded out the top five with a time that matched his birth date (19:58).
The women’s side saw perennial favourite Janet Clarke (22:54) take first place for the first time this year.
Clarke has a large trophy case from her many top three finishes in a variety of running events over the years.
On Tuesday night, Clarke was followed by skier and runner Brittany Smith (24:40), the ever-consistent Jennifer Whipple (26:23), masters plus runner Christine Paradis (27:50) and half -marathoner Nicole Hulstein (28:24).
A number of runners from Yukon’s Canada Summer Games track and field contingent ran at a moderate pace under the watchful eye of their coach Don White (22:03).
Included in the Canada Summer Games fray were Brittany Smith, Logan Roots (24:41), Boris Hoefs (24:41) and Ammon Hoefs (24:47).
Finally, two of Yukon’s fastest female race walkers, Bonnie Love and Ruth Hall, were the only walkers to brave the heat of another hot summer night in Whitehorse.
They purposely walked at a slower pace crossing the finish line together in a time of 37:26.
