It was another sunny Tuesday night in Whitehorse, with nearly 20 runners and walkers attending the weekly Intersport five-km run and walk.
Each participant knew they would be pushing their hearts into an anaerobic zone.
All of this in an effort to get to the finish line as quickly as their body would permit.
He may not play for the Detroit Red Wings, but it’s starting to look like a dynasty for Rodney Hulstein, who has won almost every race that he’s entered this season.
Tuesday night was no different and in the final kilometre, he overtook front runner Willy Palahicky (19:06), crossing the finish line first with a time of 18:38.
Stefan Wackerhagen (19:06) also caught the faltering Palahicky and they crossed the line at the same time.
Following Wackerhagen were his now familiar adversaries Tom Ullyett (19:22) and the irrepressible marathoner Keith Thaxter (19:46).
With Sue Bogle and Amy Riske not at the start line, the women’s side of the five-km was up for grabs. Chantai Minet, a local high school student, stepped into the breach and placed first with a time of 23:30.
Minet edged out strong runner Megan Phillips (23:38) by just eight seconds.
Distance runners Brenda Dion (27:01) and Christine Paradis (27:01) were tied for the third place on the podium.
The ever consistent Nicole Hulstein was not far behind at 27:52.
Masters race walkers Bonnie Love (34:04) and Arlene Ogden (34:08) provided plenty of drama on Tuesday evening.
After 5,000 meters of heart pounding race walking, they finished just four seconds apart.
This time Love kept Ogden at bay, but next week may be a different story.
