Whitehorse RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in the investigation into an attempted armed robbery at Goody’s Gas Bar early Saturday morning.

Const. Dean Hoogland said this morning the robber entered the Porter Creek store at 5:12 a.m., demanded money and sprayed the employee with bear spray.

He said the assailant immediately left the store and the employee called the RCMP.

The employee was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel, but did not have to go to Whitehorse General Hospital, Hoogland said.

He said the police dog was called in but was not able to follow a trail.

Details provided by the employee along with a photo taken from the store’s security camera indicate the assailant is between five feet, 10 inches and six feet tall, weighing approximately 160 to 180 pounds, and is believed to be of aboriginal ancestry.

“He was wearing a black jacket with a white ‘Fox’ emblem on the left chest and a large diagonal white band from the right shoulder to the left waist area,” reads a description released by the RCMP this morning. “He had heavy rubber boots on.”

Police are asking anyone who may be of assistance in the investigation to call 667-5551.

Store owner Norm Goodman said the store camera shows the assailant did have a ballaclava on but the camera did capture a good shot of his eyes.

“He was a little apprehensive about coming back for the night shift,” Goodman said of the store employee who did indeed show up for his next shift.

“He was a little shaken up.

“I am just glad it was bear spray and not a knife or a gun presented as a weapon.”

Goodman said employees are told if they’re threatened with a weapon not to resist but to just open the cash register.

In this case, the employee was not standing behind the till but was tending to the coffee machine against the wall when the robber came in the door and demanded money, then bear-sprayed the employee, Goodman said.

He said the robber bolted when the employee picked up a can of soup to throw at him.

The outdoor camera shows the assailant running toward the apartment building directly across Centennial Street, Goodman said.

He said he doesn’t think he ran north on Centennial because he would have seen him as he drove down Centennial from home, and was at store three minutes after the attempted robbery.

No doubt there are people in the area who know who this is.

Offer a reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Not terribly bright to report that the employees are instructed to open the till and hand over the cash if anyone shows up with a gun or a knife.

I suppose I should not be pointing this out either for that matter.

What was he touching with his bare hands? Fingerprints perhaps? Maybe he is in the system?

It would have been nice if you gave your employee the next day off.

Note to self, always carry a can of soup to ward off assailants and robbers.

@ anonymous; Who’s to say the employee didn’t want to come back? I agree that if the employee asked for the next day off and didn’t get it, that it would be a terrible way to treat the staff, but we don’t know what the situation is, so how can we judge?

@bobby bitman; Any owner/manager worth the name will instruct his staff to do the same thing. It’s just stuff/money… Not worth the risk.
There you go. You’re welcome. Now you can pick almost any place and give it a try.

This is why we should be just like the USA & have the legal right to bear arms. Scum like that would think twice about robbing or threatening anyone.
