Most Yukoners kept their lights on

The lights stayed on for many Yukoners during Earth Hour Saturday evening.
Yukon Energy spokeswoman Janet Patterson said this morning there was no significant drop in energy consumption through the territory between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
Earth Hour is a global environmental movement encouraging people around the world to turn off their lights and stop using power for one hour. It was set at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
A media release notes utilities in Toronto saw a 15.1 per cent drop in electricity over its normal use in that hour. The release doesn’t note changes in other communities’ consumption across the country.
“It looked normal to us,” Patterson said of the Yukon.
The thing to remember though, she said, is that at this time of year, Yukon Energy is using hydro and wind turbine technology to produce electricity which has no greenhouse gas emissions, which Earth Hour aims at reducing.
At other times of the year, when there is more demand on the system, Yukon Energy fires up diesel generators, emitting greenhouse gases.
While it appears most Yukoners weren’t participating in Earth Hour, Liberal MLA Gary McRobb was quick to argue during question period in the legislature last Thursday that all Yukoners have reduced their energy consumption lately thanks to the numerous power outages.
“This Saturday, the world will be marking an event called Vote Earth,” he said. “People around the world will be switching off their lights for one hour.
“Switching off your lights is a symbolic vote for Earth. Yukoners deserve a badge of honour because they’ve been experiencing their own Vote Earth campaign all too frequently in the past two years, and sometimes it goes out for well over an hour.
“With the possible exception of this annual event, Yukoners just want the lights to stay on.”
