Most Yukoners kept their lights on

The lights stayed on for many Yukoners during Earth Hour Saturday evening.

The lights stayed on for many Yukoners during Earth Hour Saturday evening.

Yukon Energy spokeswoman Janet Patterson said this morning there was no significant drop in energy consumption through the territory between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Earth Hour is a global environmental movement encouraging people around the world to turn off their lights and stop using power for one hour. It was set at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

A media release notes utilities in Toronto saw a 15.1 per cent drop in electricity over its normal use in that hour. The release doesn’t note changes in other communities’ consumption across the country.

“It looked normal to us,” Patterson said of the Yukon.

The thing to remember though, she said, is that at this time of year, Yukon Energy is using hydro and wind turbine technology to produce electricity which has no greenhouse gas emissions, which Earth Hour aims at reducing.

At other times of the year, when there is more demand on the system, Yukon Energy fires up diesel generators, emitting greenhouse gases.

While it appears most Yukoners weren’t participating in Earth Hour, Liberal MLA Gary McRobb was quick to argue during question period in the legislature last Thursday that all Yukoners have reduced their energy consumption lately thanks to the numerous power outages.

“This Saturday, the world will be marking an event called Vote Earth,” he said. “People around the world will be switching off their lights for one hour.

“Switching off your lights is a symbolic vote for Earth. Yukoners deserve a badge of honour because they’ve been experiencing their own Vote Earth campaign all too frequently in the past two years, and sometimes it goes out for well over an hour.

“With the possible exception of this annual event, Yukoners just want the lights to stay on.”

Why should I have to participate in Earth Hour? My power has been off for well more than an hour numerous times since the mine was connected to the grid.

Just another useless stunt to blame us regular folk for all the enviromental problems in the world. More global warming brainwashing. I turned on all my appliances and wasted energy just for the cause. Want to stop global warming??? Turn off the TV please.

I participated as I thought it was a good idea since it was respect for the Earth.  Outside didn’t seem to matter as it was light out most of the hour.  Did Janet Paterson leave her lights off during this hour? It wasn’t too long.  I usually have the lights off in the rooms I don’t occupy. If I needed light to go around my house I had my power wheelchair lights to guide me.

Earth hour is a joke anyways created by the tree hugging environmentalists and sponsored by the left wing liberal meida.  I love this planet but turning off your lights for 1 hours isn’t going to change the world.  If you want to be a true environmentalists stop eating meat, meat and meat production causes way more green house gasses then driving your SUV or or turning on your lights.  But when was the last time the greens have a honest conversation about it and not attack you

I encourage people to look at this for hypocrisy relating to the matter.

The old addage of “dont trust a politician” has to be brought up time and time again.

Stop eating meat? lol. Oh please. You claim your earth hour is left wing propaganda, well what is the whole notion of stopping eating meat will save the earth. TURN OFF THE TV. And in the meantime look in your mouth. What do you see? TEETH TO RIP APART MEAT. Thats all I need to say. Oh course they want us to stop eating meat, so we go buy some more cheeze whiz and pizza pops. Get a grip please.

I don’t think you understand what I’m trying to say I’m not going to stop eating meat myself what I am saying is that the production of meat is a way bigger producer of green house gas then using power of driving your pickup truck.  And that if people want to make a difference cut down on your meat intake. Or maybe stop getting Al gore to stop taking his jet all over the world for conferences about global warming and maybe he should drive his smart car like he wants us to do.  Its the typical political mentality “do what I say not what I do”

Arn, as usual you are off base.

Earth hour is symbolic.

It isn’t so much about saving a global hours worth of energy but creating awareness of how we are tied to electricity and then using your brain (you can do it too Arn, try it!) to figure out way to live more efficiently.

READ THE PREVIOUS POST Anthony and read it twice if you have too.

It says relating to the matter, but its totally hilarous on how you dont judge other people on thier ‘straying’ topics. It clearly shows your bias, now spread your wings and adjust to other peoples comments instead of dying to know what Im going to say next.

Al Gore is the poster boy for global warming/climate change, so I want to see his dedication to the matter but as like any other politician, does nothing at all and in it for the MONEY.

I live my life effeciently within my means, I do not need an “hour” to prove it.

Newsflash Arn.

Al Gore isn’t a politician and hasn’t been for almost a decade.

Further, he has no connection to Earth Hour.  Your wide brush is painting waaaay outside the lines.

Your latest “comeback” fails to impress me, other people and even Al Gore himself.

Al Gore was a politician for 25years but also add the year he was going to run in 2004 plus he still writes books on politics, read his recent one, do your research please and dont debate out of an pamphlet.

Read the post again, relating to the matter and he has connection to Earth Hour since he is the spokesperson for climate change, you would think he would be on for Earth Hour, but I bet if he was it would be reported vigoursly because his face brings attention to it. I guess a free market capatilistic entrepenuer didnt give him an half million dollars to shut off his power eh?

So all your little quips and points have been once again refuted, dont hate the playa, hate the game.

Armin is right. If you avoid eating meat, you’ll make a much bigger positive impact than if you turn your lights off for an hour a year.

And yeah, I’m with Anthony too; earth hour is symbolic. At least it gets people thinking.

Francias, when is the last time you looked inside the mouth of a carnivore? Look in a cat’s mouth and see if her teeth are shaped like yours.
