Approximately nine homes in the Kopper King trailer court were evacuated late last night after the RCMP emergency response team was called to assist in a standoff.
The 66-year-old suspect eventually surrendered to a police negotiator early this morning after some two hours of negotiations, police said.
The RCMP were notified of an assault with a weapon at 11:39 p.m.
‘On immediately attending the scene, police officers determined that two adults males were fighting inside a residence at the Kopper King trailer court,’ police said in a release.
Officers were able to speak with the victim, who left the residence without any incident, though the suspect refused to come out.
As officers were able to see the suspect had a rifle, the emergency response team was called in and the surrounding area was evacuated.
RCMP Cpl. Glenn Ramsay explained this morning there were no gun shots. Rather, it’s believed the rifle was used as an object to strike the victim, he said.
The suspect was released from custody later this morning, though the investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
‘The suspect and the victim were known to each other and alcohol is believed to be a factor in this incident,’ says the press release.
Evacuees of the trailer court were asked to seek alternate shelter with friends.
Police were willing to cover the cost of a hotel room for any of those without other accommodation options, according to unconfirmed reports.
