The competitive running season is winding down just at Whitehorse’s boreal forest is ablaze in colour.

At Tuesday night’s Intersport 5 km run and walk, former Whitehorse running great Ross Perkins, now of Kamloops, stood at the finish line beside head timer Marg White and cheered on exhausted runners as they finished the race.

Even though there were just eight participants, Perkins got a snap shot of Whitehorse’s 2008 running community from the very fast to the more leisurely.

Finishing in first place for the second week in a row, Luke Carlos almost went with a blazing time of 17:01.

Teenage cross country skier Logan Roots came close to breaking the 19 minute mark finishing second in 19:12. Rounding out the top three was masters runner Tom Ullyett (19:44).

Don White, still beaming from leading his Klondike Road Relay team to a win over the venerable Smokin’ Old Geezers, had complete control of fourth place by running a brisk 6:35 minute per mile pace and finishing with a time of 20:24.

In fifth place, Clarke LaPrairie ran another textbook race (24:12) holding off a charging Brian Mottus (24:55) who finished sixth.

Seventh place was taken by the James Bond of the running community, distance runner Grant Macdonald, who almost cracked the 29 minute mark (29:05).

There were no walkers or female runners on Tuesday night.
