Investigation launched after visitor found dead at hot springs

A Japanese tourist died early Thursday morning at the Takhini Hot Springs north of Whitehorse.

A Japanese tourist died early Thursday morning at the Takhini Hot Springs north of Whitehorse.

Kiyoko Nagasaki, 72, was found at 2:40 a.m. in the pool waters. She was fully clothed in winter gear, according to a release by the territory’s chief coroner.

EMS personnel took Nagasaki to Whitehorse General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The coroner’s office is investigating the death.

An autopsy and toxicology report have been ordered and will be performed early next week, the coroner said.

Nagasaki was with a group of 11 visitors to the territory. They were at the hot springs to view the northern lights.

The group had decided not to use the pool that evening, and it is unclear why or how Nagasaki entered the water.

The group noticed Nagasaki was missing prior to leaving the area at around 2:30 a.m.

The RCMP were also called to the scene and are investigating the death.

Foul play is not suspected, police said today.
