The streets and trails of Whitehorse are alive with the sounds of road and cross country runners.

After a long winter and a spring that was reluctant to appear, in the past two months there have been many running events beginning with the always well attended Law Day Charity Fun Run & Walk on April 29.

Since then, there have been the weekly Tuesday night road races and the Thursday night trail runs as well as feature races on most weekends.

With this weekend’s Mayo Midnight Marathon and Kluane to Chilkat International Bike Relay causing many runners to be in a tapering mode, just 23 runners and walkers participated in Tuesday’s Intersport 5 km Fun Run and Walk.

With all the usual A-list male runners taking the night off, speedy newcomer Logan Boehmer (18:51) crossed the finish line first.

Following Boehmer was the suddenly swift Patrick Anderson (20:55) and Malcolm Muir (22:40).

The women’s side of the event saw accomplished distance runner Larra Daley (22:09) finish in first place.

Well back of Daley were Carolyn Steele Lane (26:04) and Coralie Ullyett (26:12) who both ran at a tempo pace in anticipation of this weekend’s big races.

On the race walking side of the event, World Masters race walking gold medalist Bonnie Love (36:18) paced stalwart Arlene Ogden (36:31) to a comfortable finishing time with Love finishing first 13 seconds ahead of Ogden.

The next events on the running calendar are Thursday night’s weekly trail run at 6:30 pm at the Magnusson ski trails on the Grey Mountain Road and the Mayo

Midnight Marathon on Saturday, June 18.

See the Athletics Yukon website for details.
