The Western Canada Summer Games are in full swing in the oven-like heat of Kamloops. Meanwhile, in Whitehorse, the fall-like weather with highs in the mid-teens is providing runners with ideal conditions to compete in.

So it was at last night’s weekly Intersport Fun Run and Walk. At race time, a temperature of 17 C and a moderate south wind greeted the racers.

After a weekend that saw a cycling event, a triathlon and a marathon, the three-kilometre distance proved to be a popular one on Tuesday.

The top runners were the youthful Constance Lapointe (18:20), Lapointe’s father Simon Lapointe (18:24) and Sigourny Whipple-Grantham (18:32).

Daniel Sessford, a former Canada Summer Games medalist in cycling, came out of retirement to challenge the men’s five-km distance. Showing what kind of engine he has under the hood, Sessford finished first with a time of 19:05.

Mike Hare (19:22) went wire to wire with Sessford for the first three kilometers, but fell back when Sessford used his considerable race experience to charge ahead.

Tom Ullyett was a distant third (21:14).

The unassuming Keltie Hollingdale, long one of Yukon’s top female runners, swept the women’s five-km category with a time of 21:58. UNBC student Emily Wale (23:43) put in another strong showing placing second. Third place finisher Hayley Henderson (25:37), who ran more than 20 km in the relay portion of last weekend’s
Yukon River Trail Marathon, sprinted to the finish line with the confidence of a runner who was not hurting from last Sunday’s race.

The race walking side of the event once again saw Jane Haydock (35:11) finish first more than 30 seconds ahead of Tanya Astika (35:49), the second place finisher. Catherine Simpson placed third (38:22).
