At Tuesday night’s Intersport Fun
Run and Walk the chatter amongst the almost 20 participants was all about Sunday’s Pre-Skagway Chocolate Claim 10-Miler, the final long distance race before the Road Relay.
It was a race between the thoroughbreds on the women’s side. Perennial winner Sue Bogle (21:22) held off the adroit Amy Riske (21:48), taking first place with 26 seconds to spare.
Well back of Bogle and Riske were the almost-famous Jen Whipple (25:46), Brock University student Coralie Ullyett (27:16) and former varsity athlete Christine Paradis (27:16).
The unfailingly modest Ian Parker (19:06) was the man of the hour on the men’s side. Chased by Doug Mayr (19:17) and his Road Relay team-mate Tom Ullyett (19:41), Parker put the pedal to the metal in the last 800 meters and crossed the finish line first with a comfortable gap on Mayr. Masters runner Brian Mottus (24:37) and multi-sport athlete Charlie Roots (33:44) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
On the walking side, for the first time in weeks a man finished ahead of the women.
Philip Gibson (33:48) finished first with a time that was almost faster than some runners. Arlene Ogden (34:23) and Ruth Hall (34:23) crossed the line together in second place. Evi Watt (41:47) claimed third spot.
Please see the Athletics Yukon website for the complete results of Tuesday’s race as well as all future events including the annual Pre-Skagway Chocolate Claim 10-miler on Sunday,
