Dustball tourney begins today

The Yukon's largest annual softball tournament kicks off today at seven separate diamonds.

The Yukon’s largest annual softball tournament kicks off today at seven separate diamonds.

With 77 teams set to compete, this year’s Dustball competition will be the largest in the history of the event.

The previous largest number of teams was 74 in 2005.

Players are travelling from a number of different places, including Alaska, the Northwest Territories and, of course, several communities in the Yukon.

For the first time ever players are travelling from Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T.

Teams from the Yukon communities include Whitehorse, Mayo, Dawson and Carmacks.

The nine division finals will be held Sunday at the Pepsi Softball Complex, starting around 9:30 a.m. Finals are expected to run until around 2:30 p.m.

The different divisions at this year’s tournament include a men’s B,C and D; women’s A, B, C and Co-Ed A, B and C.

All games (excluding the finals) will have a one hour and 15 minute time limit or last until seven innings are played.
